Printer has stopped feeding from main tray. Will feed from manual feed tray. I have replaced the feed roller, and checked paper path is clear. Printer is NOT set to use manual feed. When it attempts to feed, I can see the far end of the paper being lifted up where it should be reached by the feed roller, I hear some mechanical noise like it is attempting to pick up paper, but nothing results. What is the fix? TIA

Hi @AVEE8OR1,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn printer isn't feeding paper from the main tray but works from the manual feed tray, despite having replaced the feed roller and cleared the paper path,
here are some additional troubleshooting steps to consider:
Check the Paper Tray:
- Ensure the paper is loaded correctly and not too high. Paper should be aligned and seated properly within the tray.
- Verify that the paper tray is not overfilled or underfilled, as this can affect feeding.
Inspect the Pickup Roller and Separation Pad:
- Ensure that the pickup roller is installed correctly and is making good contact with the paper.
- Check the separation pad for wear and replace it if necessary. This pad helps in separating the paper sheets and might be the cause if it’s not functioning properly.
Verify Tray Settings:
- Double-check the settings in the printer’s control panel or driver settings to ensure that the paper source is set to the main tray and not the manual feed.
Reset the Printer:
- Power off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset any internal sensors or settings.
Clean the Paper Path:
- Even if you have checked for jams, dust or debris in the paper path can cause feeding issues. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the rollers and inside the paper path.
Check for Firmware Updates:Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes updates can resolve issues related to hardware functions.
Perform a Printer Self-Test:
- Run a printer self-test or diagnostic from the printer's control panel. This can sometimes provide more information about the problem or reset certain functions.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks, Gaya1239.
Your suggestions were helpful, but unfortunately the problem still persists.
When I rty to feed from main tray, the machine cycles three times, lifting the far side of the paper in an attempt to feed, but no paper is pulled.
In cleaning the machine, I noted a black plastic piece spanning the width of the printer atop the rear of the main tray feed area. There appears to be a metallic coil behind or below that piece. On my printer, the plastic is sagging in the middle and less so on the right edge (looking into the printer). I suspect this is some sort of guide that is now blocking paper feed.
Is this a replaceable part or does it mean that I need to consign my printer as a parts donor?
Thanks!
