@bobchert, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw is displaying a paper jam error, but you cannot see any jammed paper from the open back door, follow these steps to clear it:
Turn Off and Unplug
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for a few minutes to allow internal components to cool down.
Check the Paper Trays
- Remove the main paper tray (Tray 1) and check inside for any jammed paper.
- Remove the manual feed slot (Tray 2, if in use) and inspect for paper stuck in the rollers.
Check the Rear Door
- Open the rear door and inspect for any small torn pieces of paper stuck in the rollers.
- Rotate the rollers manually to check for any obstructions.
Check the Toner Access Area
- Open the front door and remove the toner cartridges.
- Look inside for any hidden paper jammed near the fuser area.
- If found, gently pull the paper out in the direction it moves to avoid tearing.
Check the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)
- If using the ADF, open its cover and remove any stuck paper.
- Check if a small piece of paper is stuck under the rollers.
Reset the Printer
- Close all doors and reinsert the toner cartridges.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Try printing a test page.
Perform a Printer Self-Test
- On the printer screen, go to Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report.
- If the printer prints without issues, the jam may have been resolved.
If the Issue Persists
- A sensor may be stuck or falsely detecting a jam.
- Check for any debris near the sensors (located near the rollers).
- Perform a firmware update by downloading the latest version from HP website.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
