I removed a jammed piece of paper on my printer by opening the front door and accidentally pulled out the Encoder Strip.

I don't want to take it the HP store to get it fixed, I'm pretty sure it's easy to repair.

Can someone please share some step by step instructions on how to fix this and put in a new one?  Where can I buy a replacement encoder strip? Do they sell it HP branded , or maybe OEM? On eBay and Amazon, there appear to be many companies making these.  Thanks!

Hi @5102Struggling,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand why you’d prefer to handle this yourself, it looks straightforward at first glance. However, the encoder strip is a precision component that directly affects how the print head positions itself. If it’s not reinstalled correctly, even a slight misalignment can cause print quality issues, carriage jams, or make the printer unusable.

Attempting to replace it on your own also carries two important risks:

It can void your warranty and HP support coverage.

It may lead to further damage that isn’t easily reversible.

Because of this, HP strongly recommends having the encoder strip replaced by an authorized HP service center. Their technicians have the tools and calibration procedures to ensure the printer is restored properly.

The safest next step is to schedule service with HP so the strip can be reinstalled or replaced correctly. That way, you’ll keep your warranty intact and avoid turning a simple repair into a larger issue.

Thanks so much - your guidance is very much appreciated.  Always loyal to HP printers from decades over here.....

Lastly, I bough this printer @ Walmart brand new and took it with me to South America - is the warranty valid down  in Ecuador even though I bought it in Florida in November of last year?

Thanks,

Marc

Ideally I would like to see if I can take your advice + get it repaired under warranty from an HP certified repair center down there.

Hi @5102Struggling,

For your HP Smart Tank 5102, the encoder strip is a precision part that guides the printhead carriage. Accidentally pulling it out is considered customer‑induced damage, not a manufacturing defect. That means it isn’t covered under HP’s standard warranty.

On top of that, HP warranties are region‑specific. Since you purchased the printer in Florida and then brought it to Ecuador, the warranty does not transfer internationally. HP service centers outside the U.S. won’t honor the coverage.

Because of both factors, the nature of the damage and the region mismatch, this repair would be treated as out-of-warranty service

If you want the printer restored properly, the safest option is to have an HP Authorized Service Center in Ecuador handle the replacement and calibration, but it would be a paid repair.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Best regards,
