Job type:  Paper Type

Without the printer model, we can answer the general inquiry.

HP Smart - application - does not understand the concept of custom Presets.

That means that when you use the application, the settings made elsewhere and the built-in settings in the application are used to set up the job parameters.  You can change the settings -- most settings will not "stick" from one job to the next.

Tray and Paper - Defaults

Before the job is configured -- and where supported --

Adjust the defaults for Paper Size and Type.

If the printer includes a full service touchscreen Printer Control Panel,

Change / Modify / Check the Paper Size / Type right after the paper is changed or after the intake tray is opened and then closed

AND / OR

If the printer is on your network

If the feature is supported (try more than one Browsers as necessary),

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to check / adjust the Paper Size / Type - Tray and Paper

EWS format differs by printer model type.

This is important.

EWS Tray and Paper Format differs by printer model / type

This is important because not all printers support the same features (paper size / type, tray(s)), security

Two Examples - EWS - Tray and Paper

EWS > HP Document / How-to (InkJet Printers – Original Format)

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

OR

HP Laser Printers - Using the Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Reminder:  If asked enter the printer’s PIN number – the default number is generally located on the back or inside the printer.

EWS – Tray and Paper Management

Original EWS

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model and EWS version Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

EWS_9025_Preferences_Tray_and_Paper_Management_All_12EWS_9025_Preferences_Tray_and_Paper_Management_All_12

OR

Example - (Alternate EWS format - select new OfficeJet Pro printers and at least a few LaserJet printers)

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next  (in addition and as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default options / tray
