Hi @Elizabeth-17,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
To troubleshoot and resolve the issue of your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer stopping and showing a paper jam error when printing envelopes from Word or Access, follow these steps:
Basic Troubleshooting Steps
Check for Actual Paper Jam:
- Even if the printer indicates a paper jam and you don't see one, double-check all accessible areas for any small pieces of paper that might be stuck.
- Open the front cover, remove the ink cartridges, and check inside for any paper fragments. Also, check the rear access door and the input/output trays.
Use Correct Envelope Settings:
- Ensure you have selected the correct envelope size and type in both the printer settings and the software (Word/Access).
- Go to Word > Mailings > Envelopes > Options > Envelope Options, and make sure the correct envelope size is selected.
- Go to Printer Properties > Paper/Quality tab, and ensure the correct envelope type and size are selected.
Printer Maintenance
- Clean the Paper Path:
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to clean the rollers and the paper path inside the printer.
- Check for and remove any debris or dust that might be causing the paper feed issues.
Software and Driver Updates
Update Printer Drivers:
- Ensure you have the latest printer drivers installed. Go to the HP support website, download, and install the latest drivers for your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.
Update Firmware:
- Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. You can do this from the printer’s control panel or the HP support website.
Will share the remaining steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi @Elizabeth-17,
Here are the remaining steps:
Printer Settings
- Adjust Printer Settings:
- Go to the printer’s control panel and navigate to Settings > Preferences > Paper Handling.
- Ensure the paper type and size match the envelopes you are using.
Printing Process
Load Envelopes Correctly:
- Ensure the envelopes are loaded correctly in the input tray. Follow the instructions in the printer manual for loading envelopes.
- Make sure the envelopes are not stuck together and the flaps are closed.
Print One Envelope at a Time:
- Try printing one envelope at a time to see if the issue persists. This can help identify if the problem is related to handling multiple envelopes.
Software-Specific Solutions
Check Print Spooler:
- Sometimes the print spooler might get stuck. Restart the print spooler service:
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Scroll down to "Print Spooler," right-click, and select "Restart."
Print from a Different Application:
- Try printing envelopes from a different application or using a different method (e.g., printing a PDF of the envelope).
Advanced Steps
- Factory Reset Printer:
- As a last resort, perform a factory reset on your printer to ensure all settings are back to default.
- Refer to the printer manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset. Click here and go to page 138
If none of the above steps work, there may be a more serious issue with your printer. Contact HP Phone Support for further assistance.
