HP Officejet Pro 8720 all-in-0ne printer gives a paper jam notice every time I use HP Premium Plus Photo Paper to print photos. Works fine with plain paper for the same photo. I have a wireless internet connection.

Hi @dj650,
Thank you for your response,
Since you’ve already tried several common troubleshooting steps without success, here are some advanced tips to help resolve this paper-feed issue on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720.
Adjust Paper Guide Pressure:
- Ensure the paper guides in the tray are snug but not too tight around the HP Premium Plus Photo Paper. If the paper guides are too loose or too tight, it can cause misfeeds or jams. Try slightly adjusting them to see if it improves feed consistency.
Use the Rear Paper Feed (If Available):
- Some OfficeJet models, including the 8720, allow feeding paper directly through a rear tray or manual slot. Check if your printer has a rear paper feed and try loading the photo paper through this slot. This could provide a straighter path and avoid jams.
Roller Conditioning:
- If the rollers are worn, they may not be able to grip thicker photo paper effectively. To help the rollers condition for thicker paper, try feeding a few sheets of regular, thick paper (like cardstock) through the printer several times to help the rollers adjust to thicker materials.
Calibrate the Paper Feed Mechanism:
- In your printer's settings, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Calibrate Paper Feed (or similar, depending on your model’s interface). This calibration can sometimes optimize the feed for different paper types.
Increase Print Quality Setting:
- Sometimes setting a higher print quality (e.g., Best or Max DPI) makes the printer adjust for higher precision and slower feeding, which can help handle thicker photo paper.
Check Environmental Factors:
- Photo paper is sensitive to humidity, which can affect how it feeds. If possible, store the photo paper in a cool, dry place before loading. Also, try fanning the edges of the paper before loading it into the tray to prevent multiple sheets from sticking together.
Clean and Inspect the Output Rollers:
- After the paper passes through the main feed rollers, it may reach the output rollers. Carefully open the access panels and inspect these rollers as well, as debris here can also contribute to jams. Clean them gently with a lint-free cloth if needed.
Try Another HP Photo Paper Type:
- HP Premium Plus Photo Paper is thicker than some other photo paper types. If possible, test the printer with HP Advanced Photo Paper or a similar lighter-weight option to see if it feeds better. This could indicate that your printer’s feed mechanism struggles specifically with thicker materials.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @dj650,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer can sometimes have trouble handling thicker or specialty papers like HP Premium Plus Photo Paper, especially if the paper is slightly thicker than standard types. Here are some steps to address this issue.
- Paper Handling: Ensure you’re loading the HP Premium Plus Photo Paper into the correct paper tray and aligning it properly. Avoid overfilling the tray, as this can contribute to jams.
- Paper Type Settings: Before printing, go to your print settings on your computer and make sure the paper type is set to "HP Premium Plus Photo Paper" or the equivalent. This helps the printer recognize the thickness and adjust the feed mechanism accordingly.
- Printer Firmware: Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer. Updates can sometimes resolve paper-handling issues.
- Loading One Sheet at a Time: Try loading just one sheet of photo paper to see if this improves feed reliability.
- Clean the Rollers: Paper jams can sometimes occur due to dirt on the rollers. Open the back access panel of the printer, clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth and distilled water, and allow them to dry completely before reassembling.
If the issue persists after these steps, you might consider using a slightly lighter photo paper, as some thicker papers can be challenging for this model.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
