As the title states, I have a 0005FBB6 error code on my printer, which will then prompt me to turn the printer off, then on again. I've done this multiple times with no success. I've also unplugged the printer for over 30 seconds and then tried it again, with still no success. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi @ZSweeney11,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is to see error code 0005FBB6 on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978, especially when restarting and unplugging the printer doesn’t help. You’ve done the right thing by reaching out, and I’m here to guide you through the next steps.

What Does Error Code 0005FBB6 Mean?

This error is not publicly documented in HP’s standard error code list. Still, based on similar cases and HP’s internal guidance, it likely points to a firmware or internal system failure, possibly related to:

  • A corrupted firmware update
  • A failed initialization sequence
  • A hardware fault in the printer’s logic board or memory

Recommended Steps to Resolve It

1. Update Firmware via HP App

Even if the printer seems unresponsive, try updating the firmware using the HP Smart app:

2. Run Diagnose & Fix Tool

HP’s built-in tool can detect and resolve firmware-related issues:

  • Open HP Smart App
  • Click your printer → Select Diagnose & Fix
  • Follow the on-screen instructions

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I am unable to add or view the printer in the HP Smart app because I am not currnetly able to add it a wifi network and don't have ethernet. The printer will simply boot and go straight to the error screen. I have tried scanning for it in the HP smart app on several different wifi networks and it has not popped up.

Hi @ZSweeney11,

Since your OfficeJet Pro 6978 goes straight to an error screen and you can’t get it onto Wi-Fi or Ethernet, that’s why the HP Smart app can’t detect or add it. Let’s try to get around that.

Steps to Try

  1. Power reset the printer
    • Turn it off while it’s on the error screen.
    • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
    • Wait at least 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power on.
    • See if it still goes directly to the error screen.

  2. Check the exact error message
    • Some 6978 units show “Printhead error” or “Ink system failure.” If you can tell me the exact error wording, that will help narrow the fix.

  3. Bypass the network setup (for now)
    • Even without Wi-Fi/Ethernet, the 6978 should allow USB connection.
    • Download and install the HP Smart app or full feature software/driver for Windows 10/11.
    • Connect your printer directly to the PC with a USB cable.
    • See if the software recognizes it and allows firmware update or diagnostics.

  4. Run firmware update (if it boots enough)
    • If you can reach the printer menu after reset (sometimes tapping the screen during startup can let you in), update firmware from Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
    • If not, firmware can also sometimes be pushed through the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool on Windows when connected by USB.

  5. If it’s a printhead/ink error
    • Remove all cartridges.
    • Check that the printhead latch is fully closed and cartridges are seated correctly.
    • Power on with cartridges removed, then reinsert them when prompted.

 I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

My apologies for the delayed response. The printer will turn on and then go straight from the loading screen with a white background and a blue HP logo into an image displaying the code with a blue background and a power symbol. This image with the code only remains on screen for a split second before transitioning again to a black screen that instructs me to turn the printer off, then on again. I have tried connecting it via USB-B as well to my PC, and the HP Smart app doesn't detect or register it when attempting to pair.
