Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Hi - I just bought an HP 2800e All in one printer \ scanner & tried to get it working on a Mac OS 10.11 El Capitan.

Is there a 'work around' to get it working. Possibly a driver for El Capitan ?

Any help offered greatly appreciated.

Thanks GKen7.

Hi @Gken7,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP DeskJet 2800e All-in-One Printer requires a more recent macOS version than OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) for full compatibility, and HP does not provide official drivers for older macOS versions for this printer. However, there are workarounds you can try.

Use Generic Drivers

  1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click the "+" button to add a new printer.
  3. Select your printer from the list.
  4. Choose "Select Software" or "Use", and select Generic PCL Printer or AirPrint if available.
  5. Click Add and try printing.

Note: This may limit advanced features but can provide basic printing functionality.

Install Gutenprint Drivers

Gutenprint provides open-source printer drivers that support many printers, including HP models, on older macOS versions.

  1. Download and install Gutenprint: Gutenprint for Mac.
  2. Add the printer via System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  3. Select Gutenprint as the driver.

Use HP Smart App on Another Device

Since the printer may not fully support El Capitan, you can use the HP Smart app on a compatible device (e.g., a smartphone, newer computer) to set up and manage your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
