HP 3830 printer
Microsoft Windows XP

I copy an HP 3830 driver  webpac downloaded on an internet enabled win 11 computer, copy and save onto a USB drive to

paste to the desktop of an XP 32bit home version OS . When I extract the files it seems to continue to indicated 91 % or so then stops when a WIN error comes up "encountered a problem"

The target XP OS tower has internet access (not usually enabled) but is not fully compatible with the HP support site to reach the "drivers" choice using the Firefox browser..

The target 32bit XP PC hosts several acctg  programs that cannot be moved and does not use the internet (preferred)

Hi @CAB950,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are trying to install a printer driver on Windows XP from a Windows 11 machine can sometimes lead to issues, especially with compatibility and extraction errors.

Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Steps to Resolve Driver Extraction Issues

Check Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the driver you downloaded is compatible with Windows XP. HP's support site might offer drivers specifically for Windows XP that you can try to download.

Use a Different Extraction Tool:

  • Sometimes the built-in extraction tool in Windows can have problems. Consider using a third-party extraction tool like 7-Zip or WinRAR to extract the driver files on the Windows 11 machine before copying them to the USB drive.

Re-download the Driver:

  • If the extracted files are incomplete, try downloading the driver again from the HP website. Ensure that the file download completes fully before transferring it to the USB drive.

Disable Antivirus/Firewall Temporarily:

  • Sometimes antivirus or firewall settings can interfere with the extraction process. Temporarily disable them on the Windows XP machine while extracting the driver files.

Check for Windows Updates: Software and Drivers for HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Printer

  • Make sure that the Windows XP machine is fully updated. Sometimes, missing updates can cause compatibility issues with newer software.

Manual Installation:

  • If the extracted files are successfully copied to the Windows XP machine, try manually installing the driver:
    • Go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
    • Click on Add a Printer.
    • Choose Local Printer and follow the prompts to select the driver manually from the location where you extracted the files.

Use Basic Driver (Generic):

  • If the HP-specific driver continues to fail, you may try using a generic driver that could allow for basic printing functions. This is usually done by selecting a compatible printer model from the list of installed printers in Windows XP.

Check USB Drive:

  • Make sure the USB drive is functioning correctly and that there are no issues with file transfers. You may want to try a different USB drive if possible.

Consider Using a Different PC for Installation:

  • If all else fails, consider installing the printer on another compatible PC that has internet access and then connecting it to the Windows XP machine via USB or network.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I took the suggestion of downloading the webpac for XP 32 bit with a different OS other then win 11 and used a win 7 OS, downloaded and copied the webpac - pasted to desktop of the XP 32 bit target and it extracted normally , looking for the 3830 connected etc
