Welcome to the HP Community --

There is perhaps nothing to be done to change the situation.

We are messenger in this scenario and not those who manufacture the hardware or forge policy governing its use.

-- What can you do? --

Much depends on the age of the printer and the Printer Model.

For example,

  • Some laser printers might tolerate non-HP toner cartridges.
  • Some older model inkjet printers support compatible non-hp ink.

Non-HP ink cartridge use (Firmware Update)

Updates have been released to correct issues in certain affected printers - only as listed

HP Inkjet Printers - Dynamic Security Feature Affecting Cartridges Using Non-HP Security Chip

    This document is for HP Officejet 6950, Officejet Pro 6230, 6810, 6820, 6830, 6970, 7740, 8210, 8610, 8620,

    8630, 8640, 8660, 8700, X451dn/dw, X476dn/dw, X551dw, X576dw, PageWide 300, 400, and 500 printers.

Next,

The documents (below) describe the requirements and the Dynamic Security feature used to protect the printer from non-HP cartridges.

Non-HP cartridges are those ink cartridges that lack (do not have) an embedded HP chip.

-- What if?  --

Should you have an Instant Ink contract and / OR you have enabled HP+ service (premium print / scan features), then your printer requires the use of HP genuine cartridges.

-- Important --

Other printer manufacturers use a different name for their ink protection feature.
