I have HP Smart and it keeps failing to install the driver for the 4255e printer. All the solutions I find say to use HP Smart. Even the manual solution from HP Smart failed.

Hi @Cwickster,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing persistent issues with installing the driver for your HP 4255e printer using HP Smart. Here are some steps you can follow to resolve the issue:

Check Internet Connection: Ensure that your internet connection is stable since HP Smart often requires an internet connection to download the latest drivers.

Disable Firewall/Antivirus Temporarily: Sometimes, security software can block the installation process. Try temporarily disabling them and reattempt the installation.

Run Windows Update: Ensure your Windows OS is up to date, as driver installations may rely on the most recent updates from the operating system.

Clean Boot:

  • Open the Run dialog by pressing Windows Key + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.

  • Select the Services tab and check the box for Hide all Microsoft services. Click Disable all.

  • Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager. Disable all startup items.

  • Restart your computer and try reinstalling the driver.

Download Drivers Manually:

  • Visit the Official HP® Support page.

  • Search for and select your specific printer model.

  • Download the latest driver compatible with your operating system and install it manually.

Reset HP Smart:

  • Open HP Smart, disconnect and remove the printer from the app.

  • Uninstall HP Smart by going to your computer's Settings > Apps > Installed Apps. Find HP Smart and uninstall it.

  • Reinstall HP Smart from the Microsoft Store and set up your printer again. HP Smart.

Check for Windows Printer Queue Issues:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.

  • Right-click any problematic printer entries and remove them.

  • Clear the print spooler by typing net stop spooler in Command Prompt (Admin), delete the contents of C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and then type net start spooler.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.
