I'm running an HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M227 fdw with a macbook air running Ventura 13.0.1
A couple weeks ago I started getting an error that the FW is corrupt and then also a 49 service error.
When I try to download the new firmware, I get this message:
"HP Firmware Updater” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software."
I can bypass this message by right clicking to open however the device discovery doesn't show anything to download. Please let me know how to get the new firmware onto my printer!
Thank you!

Hi @dianestern,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you're facing an issue with updating the firmware on your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw printer using your MacBook Air running Ventura 13.0.1. The error messages you've mentioned suggest there might be an issue with the firmware or the firmware updater itself. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this problem:
Check HP's Website: Ensure that you are trying to download the firmware from the official HP website. Go to the HP support website and search for your printer model to find the latest firmware update.
Reset the Printer: Sometimes, resetting the printer to its factory settings can resolve firmware-related issues. To do this, follow these steps:
- a. Turn off the printer.
- b. Disconnect any USB cables or network connections.
- c. Press and hold the lower-left corner of the touchscreen while turning on the printer.
- d. Hold the screen until the "Permanent Storage Init" message appears, and then release it.
Try a Different Browser: If you're downloading the firmware from a web browser, try using a different browser to see if you encounter the same error. Sometimes, browser security settings can interfere with downloads.
Disable Gatekeeper (Temporary): If you're still getting the "can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software" error, you can temporarily disable Gatekeeper to open the firmware updater. Here's how:
- a. Go to "System Preferences" on your Mac.
- b. Click on "Security & Privacy."
- c. Under the "General" tab, you might see a message that says "HP Firmware Updater" was blocked. Click the "Open Anyway" button to override Gatekeeper.
Check Network Connection: Make sure your printer is connected to the same network as your MacBook Air. The firmware update might not appear if the printer is not discoverable on the network.
Use the HP Smart App: You can also try using the HP Smart app to check for and update firmware. Install the HP Smart app on your Mac and use it to connect to your printer.
Remember to proceed with caution when disabling security features like Gatekeeper, and enable them after the firmware update is complete to maintain the security of your system. Additionally, ensure you're using the correct firmware for your printer model to avoid any compatibility issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
