Envy 5540 Series
macOS 10.15 Catalina

Got a new mac running Catalina. I've connected the Envy 5540 via USB cable and also tried via wifi though it doesn't seem to "remember" the wifi. When I select <print> for any document, pdf, whatever -- I seem to have to remember the printer every time. I'll get several possible printer selections Envy 5540 series or Envy 5540 series 3. Sometimes I get no selections and have to start through HPSmart again. I never seem to be able to consistently pick either the "series" or "series 3" and know which will print. I've also seen Series 1 appear. Sometimes I pick one of the available printers and it will say "connecting to printer" but nothing ever prints. If I select Scan from the Envy itself, sometimes it scans and sometimes it says it can't find the computer. If I unplug and replug the USB, then usually it'll scan correctly.

What is wrong with my setup that I can't have just the one single printer/scanner selected every time and print on the first try each time? Thanks!!

@dnjscheer, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

First, connect the printer and the MAC using wireless network

Disconnect the USB cable.

On the printer screen, go to Setup > Network Setup > Restore network settings

Go back to Network > Wireless > Wireless setup wizard and select your network.

  • Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the MAC should be on the 2.4GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.

Now, let us uninstall all the Envy printer entries on the MAC and reinstall it.

Click the Apple menu, and then select System Preferences.

Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

Click the name of your printer, click the Minus sign, and then delete all the envy 5540 printer entries.

Select printer and click the minus sign

Click the Plus sign, and then click Add Printer or Scanner.

Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select AirPrint

Click Add to add the printer to the list.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

Under 'kind', select 'Bonjour multifunction'

Try to print.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for this. I've done some of these steps but I'll follow them all in order.
