@Les12345, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

If your HP Smart Tank Plus 651 Wireless All-in-One printer is prompting you to "remove and reinsert the color printhead" and won't start up, it likely indicates a printhead installation or detection issue. Here's how to resolve it:

Check Printhead Installation

Follow these steps carefully:

  • Turn on the printer.
  • Open the front door, then the printhead access door.
  • Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
  • Press and release the blue latch to open the printhead cover.
  • Remove the tri-color printhead and inspect it:
    • Ensure the plug on top has been removed.
    • Ensure the tape covering the copper contacts has been removed.
    • Do not touch the copper contacts or ink nozzles.
  • Reinsert the printhead at a slight upward angle until it clicks into place.
  • Close the printhead cover and front door.

Align the Printheads

  • If your printer has a touchscreen, follow the prompts to print and scan the alignment page.
  • If not, the printer will automatically print an alignment page when ready. Follow the instructions to scan it.

Reset the Printer

If the error persists:

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on.
