I can't complete the initialisation for my refurbished HP 7720 Printer because the Setup H cartridges are Depleted, and swapping with new cartridges produces an error saying I need Setup Catridges.

 

I can't get past this loop in the initialisation, HP virtual chat, was unable to come up with a suggestion. There have been existing entries in the forums, but the solutions were privately messaged.

 

How can I pass this error, I can't seem to get OOBE to work either.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we’re truly sorry for the frustration you’re experiencing with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720.

We understand how concerning it is to be stuck in the initialization loop, especially after trying new cartridges and not being able to move past the Setup cartridge requirement.

To clarify:

During first-time initialization (OOBE – Out of Box Experience), this printer requires genuine HP Setup cartridges. Standard retail cartridges will not allow the printer to complete the initial setup process.

At this time, the OOBE bypass option is not available for this model. The printer must complete initialization with the original Setup cartridges before it can accept regular cartridges.

Since your refurbished unit is reporting that the Setup cartridges are depleted, the recommended next step would be:
 

1️⃣ Contact the point of purchase
If the printer was recently purchased refurbished, the seller should provide a working set of Setup cartridges or replace the depleted ones so the device can complete initialization.
 

2️⃣ Visit or contact an HP Authorized Store / HP Authorized Service Provider
They can check the unit and assist in obtaining the correct Setup cartridges required to complete the process.

Unfortunately, without functional Setup cartridges, the printer cannot proceed past this stage.
