Hi @nefarious-pc,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Thanks for the detailed information you've provided and for taking all the right troubleshooting steps so far!

I completely understand how frustrating this must be, especially since the cartridges were working just fine before the update. Let me explain what’s likely going on and how we can move forward together.

Your HP OfficeJet Pro 8035 (and other similar models) includes a feature called Dynamic Security. This is built into the printer’s firmware and is designed to only work with new or reused cartridges that contain HP’s original security chips or circuitry.

When the firmware updates, it can enhance or reactivate this security, which may block third-party or refilled cartridges that don't meet HP's authentication standards.

So while your non-HP cartridges may have worked before, the most recent firmware likely re-enabled the security protocols, and that’s why they’re now being rejected.

Use Original HP Cartridges
To restore full functionality, I’d recommend switching to genuine HP ink cartridges. This will ensure the best compatibility and performance without triggering supply errors.

A Quick Note from Us

At HP, we want to ensure the best possible printing experience, quality, and security. Dynamic Security helps protect you and your device from potential risks like counterfeit supplies or compromised chips. But we totally understand the impact it can have when you’ve been using compatible alternatives.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed, or if you'd like help locating genuine cartridges or checking your warranty status, I’ve got you.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply.

My father in law and I (as I am in his employ as his lead Computer/Software -  Support Agent/Consultant) have worked for H.P. as  Counterfeit Investigators for a very long time.

We have recovered millions of Counterfeit H.P. Cartridges for H.P.

I can, without a doubt, tell you my Cartridges are not Counterfeit as I have taken and passed the H.P. class in Counterfeit detection.

I would like to use the Cartridges my wife purchased if you can please give me instructions on how to disable the proprietary Dynamic Security or explain how to rollback my firmware, or whatever steps I need to take to make the cartridges work I would be most gracious. I do have valid H.P. cartridges in my H.P. Envy printer and my H.P. color laserjet printer. Its just my wife bought these "other" cartridges and its to late to return them to the Amazon River, lol. So she feels very upset/bad because she was trying to not have to ask me to replace them as all i ever do is work with pc'z and fix family's pc'z and friend's pc'z and friend's friends pc'z. She was just trying to do me a solid and its breaking her sweet heart that she thinks she just wasted the money and my time.

I know you, as someone that works in the field, know exactly what she is talking about and can appreciate it. (-_•)

@nefarious-pc, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you so much for posting your query! My colleague is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.

HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. HP recommends using genuine HP ink or toner supplies available from the HP Store. Go to HP Anti Counterfeiting and Fraud Program for more information on using authentic HP cartridges.

If the error displays with genuine HP cartridges, select No, OK, or Continue. If the print job completes, the issue is resolved but you might need to dismiss the message every time you print until the cartridges are depleted. Otherwise continue with these steps to resolve the issue.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.
  2. Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  4. Wait 60 seconds.
  5. Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.
  6. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Replace the problem cartridge

Installing a new cartridge usually resolves cartridge errors.

  1. Obtain a replacement cartridge.
  • Printer is enrolled in Instant Ink. Replacement cartridges are part of your subscription. If you have another Instant Ink cartridge on hand, install it. Otherwise, contact HP Instant Ink support for a new cartridge.
  • Printer is NOT enrolled in Instant Ink. Go to the HP Store or a local retailer to find and purchase compatible supplies. HP recommends genuine HP cartridges.
  1. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
  2. Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message, and then insert the new cartridge into the slot.
  3. Repeat these steps to replace any other cartridges indicated in the error message.
  4. Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area, and then follow any instructions to align the printer.

I truly hope these steps help get things back on track. If you have any questions or need any further clarification, just let me know – I’m happy to guide you through it and make sure everything works perfectly.

Take care, and I hope you have an amazing day ahead! 😊

Problem solved? 🎉 That’s fantastic! If you could mark this as the Accepted Solution, it would help others find their way here faster. And if you found this helpful, a simple ‘yes’ would mean a lot – it makes my day and gives this reply a little street cred! 🏅
