Bought the printer earlier this week as I needed to print A3, and the printer won't let me select A3 as an option. I have wasted hours trying to sort this. Frustrating. Can somebody from HP please help?

I will let the moderators know you want someone from HP to answer.

-- Answer - Courtesy -- Short Version --

I suspect the source of the problem is the driver assignment.

-- Supported versions of Windows --

IPP / Microsoft Drivers do not include product specialty paper sizes or types.

The solution is to install the full driver printer software.

Two options:

HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software (Internet connection required for driver installation)

OR

HP OfficeJet Pro 9720 Series EasyStart Printer Setup Software - Offline Use Only

  • Open the Webpage for the option you want to try.
  • Enter your Operating System / version and Submit
  • Download and run the installation package using an administrator type account
  • Restart the computer and sign in

Next,

  • Make sure the printer is selected as the Default printing Device else make sure you select the printer when configuring your job.
  • Make sure Printer Properties > tab Advanced > Driver is set to the installed HP driver and not one of the IPP / Microsoft drivers
  • Item #1 Driver
  •   Printer_Properties_Reprint_19Printer_Properties_Reprint_19

Hi @user3311

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand how it feels especially when you purchased the HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e Wide Format All-in-One specifically for A3 printing. If A3 is not available as a paper size, the issue is usually related to the printer driver, paper settings, or software configuration rather than the printer hardware. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Confirm the printer detects A3 paper

  • Load A3 paper into the input tray.
  • Adjust the paper guides so they are firmly against the paper.
  • On the printer's touchscreen, check whether it prompts you to confirm the paper size.
  • If it doesn't:
  • Go to Settings → Paper Handling.
  • Select the tray.
  • Set:
  • Paper Size: A3
  • Paper Type: Plain Paper (or the type you're using)
  • Save the settings.

Select A3 in the print settings

When printing:

  • Press Ctrl + P.
  • Select HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e.
  • Click Printer Properties or Preferences.
  • Under Paper/Quality or Advanced:
  • Set Paper Size = A3.
  • Ensure Paper Source matches the tray containing A3 paper.
  • Click Apply and print.

If A3 does not appear in the list, continue to the next step.

Check the installed driver

Windows may have installed a generic driver that does not support all printer features.

  • Open Control Panel
  • Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click the printer.
  • Select Printer Properties.
  • Open the Advanced tab.
  • Verify the driver name.

Remove the printer and install the full HP driver instead. Generic drivers often do not expose A3 printing options.

Reinstall the HP Full Feature software

  • Remove the printer from Printers & Scanners.
  • Uninstall:
  • HP Smart
  • HP printer software
  • Restart the PC.
  • Install the latest Full Feature Software for the HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e from HP Support.
  • Add the printer again.
  • Check if A3 is now available.

Print from another application

Try printing an A3 PDF from:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Microsoft Word
  • Paint (create a blank A3 page)

Sometimes the issue is application-specific rather than printer-related.

Take care and have an amazing day!
