A few years ago now I purchased an HP OfficeJet 7510 wide format A3 printer to produce a booklet using paper larger than A4.

I soon realised you couldn't set Custom size paper. I contacted HP help and after a few exchanges a  nice man helped me with a work around. He got me to download the driver for the HP 9800 DeskJet A3+ wide format printer and talked me through installing it. BINGO! everything worked, I could set my custom size paper 245 x 370 and print in booklet format.

I got rid of the HP 7510 about 18 months ago and recently bought an HP 9720e. Low and behold same problem as before arose can't duplex or print booklet on paper bigger than A4/letter.

Can I find a driver, maybe the 9800 again or another and install in my 9720e to do the job.

Sorry for the long winded explanation.

Hi @alanathp

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I appreciate the detailed background you’ve shared. From what you’ve described, the HP OfficeJet 9720e is not allowing duplex or booklet printing on paper sizes larger than A4/Letter, similar to what you experienced previously with the 7510. You were able to achieve custom paper sizes with the 9800 DeskJet driver in the past, and now you’re exploring whether a similar driver solution can be applied to the 9720e.

To ensure clarity:

  • The HP 9720e uses the HP App and HP’s current driver package, which is designed specifically for this model.
  • Installing drivers from other printer families (such as the DeskJet 9800) is not supported for the 9720e. The recommended path is to use the official HP driver and HP App, which provide the supported features for this product.
  • Booklet and duplex printing options are available, but they are limited to supported paper sizes defined in the 9720e specifications.

Here’s the official HP resource for your printer, where you can review supported paper sizes and printing features:
HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e Printer - Product Specifications

To summarize:

  • The issue is understood as a limitation with custom paper sizes beyond A4/Letter when using duplex/booklet printing.
  • The 9720e requires its own driver and HP App; alternative drivers like the 9800 are not compatible.
  • The next step is to confirm the supported paper sizes and features in the official documentation above, so we can align your workflow with what the printer is designed to handle.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
