I got a warning that I needed to install a new driver for my 9020 all-in-one. That install could not be performed automatically and required a "manual" install. I did so but the printer was removed from my control panel list and re-added in a special "Unspecified" section where the options for things like test printing were removed.  The printer got installed with Bluetooth, but I want it installed with ethernet as the wired connection is much quicker and more stable.

What's going on here and how can I fix it?

Good Lord, I hate this unnecessary BS.

I've been in IT all my life and this is screwy!

Please help!!!

Hi @wetash,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your frustration — your HP OfficeJet 9020 All-in-One was working fine, but after a manual driver reinstall, it now shows up as “Unspecified” and connects only via Bluetooth, not Ethernet. Let’s go through the steps to restore a proper wired network connection and get full printer functionality back.

Completely remove the broken printer installation

Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.

Right-click any listing for your 9020 (both under “Printers” and “Unspecified”) → Remove device.

Press Windows + R, type printui /s /t2, and delete any drivers related to HP OfficeJet 9020 Series.

Restart the computer once done.

Ensure the printer is properly connected via Ethernet

Connect the printer directly to your router or switch with a known-good Ethernet cable.

On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Network Setup → Ethernet → View Network Summary to confirm it has an IP address (for example, 192.168.x.x).

If not, choose Network Setup → Restore Network Defaults, then reconnect the cable and wait a minute.

Install the full feature software manually

Go to https://support.hp.com → search for OfficeJet Pro 9020 series.

Download the Full Feature Software and Driver package (not the Smart App version).

Run the installer, choose Ethernet (Wired Network) when prompted, and let it detect the printer by IP.

Do not choose Bluetooth or Wi-Fi during setup.

Manually add the printer by IP (if not auto-detected)

Press Windows + R, type control printers, and click Add a printer.

Choose The printer that I want isn’t listed → Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.

Enter the IP address from Step 2.

When prompted for a driver, select Have Disk, then browse to:
C:\Program Files\HP\HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series\drivers

Choose the correct INF file and finish setup.

Check that the printer shows under “Printers,” not “Unspecified”

It should now appear as HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series (Network) with full status and test page options.

Right-click it → Printer Properties → Ports → verify it’s using a Standard TCP/IP Port tied to the printer’s IP address.

I hope this helps.
