Adding Printer to my Computer

Operating System is macOS Sequoia 15.1  Hello i am trying to install the HP LaserJet 1020 on my computer but i can not get past the "Choose a Driver" under Add Printer. When i click choose driver my LaserJet is not listed. How do i go about this. I tried installing the driver but when i click the downloaded file it says it cant open it

1. Check Compatibility

The HP LaserJet 1020 may not have a direct driver for macOS 15.1, as it is an older model. In such cases, macOS often uses generic drivers or provides support through the Apple-supplied printer drivers.

2. Install Generic HP Printer Drivers

• Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
• Click the + button to add the printer.
• If your printer appears in the list, select it.
• If it doesn’t, try adding it manually by selecting IP or Windows and entering the printer’s IP address if it’s connected over the network.

3. Install HP Easy Start or HP Printer Drivers HP Easy Start Software and Driver Downloads

If you're unable to find a driver through the default macOS setup, try the following:

• Download HP Easy Start: Go to the HP support page and search for HP Easy Start.
• Install the Software: Follow the prompts to download and install the HP Easy Start software. This tool will search for compatible drivers for your LaserJet 1020.
• After installation, restart your computer and try adding the printer again.

4. Use AirPrint (If Available) Set up the HP printer with AirPrint in macOS 

• In case the specific driver isn’t available, check if your printer supports AirPrint, Apple's built-in printing protocol.
• Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
• Click the + button to add a printer.
• If AirPrint is supported, your printer should appear under Nearby Printers, and you can select it without needing to manually choose a driver.

5. Troubleshoot Driver Issues

If you're still encountering issues where the driver cannot be opened:

• Ensure the downloaded driver is for macOS and that it’s a .dmg file.
• Try opening it on a different Mac user account to rule out permission issues.
• Make sure your macOS version is up to date to avoid compatibility issues.
