Hi, I'm trying to setup my printer (HP Photosmart 6510) to my Chromebook (Lenovo Ideapad) but I'm struggling to do so. I tried downloading HP app/smart and the various devices support apps I could find via GooglePlay but no success. Is my chromebook not compatible?
I also tried to add my serial number as an alternate way for manual setup but it kept saying my serial number is incorrect. That's surprising as it is connected using the same details on my Windows laptop and I have tripled checked all the digits for accuracy.
Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @Lily165,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand you’re having trouble adding your HP Photosmart 6510 to your Lenovo Chromebook. Let’s go through a few checks to see what could be causing this.
Confirm Chromebook printing support
HP Smart does not support older printers like the Photosmart 6510 on ChromeOS.
But the printer can still work using native Chromebook printing (CUPS).
Make sure the printer is on the same Wi-Fi
On the printer, open Setup > Wireless > Wireless Setup Wizard and reconnect it to the same network as your Chromebook.
Chromebook can only detect printers on the same Wi-Fi.
Add printer through ChromeOS settings
On your Chromebook go to:
Settings > Advanced > Printing > Printers > Add Printer
Your 6510 should appear under “Available printers.”
Select it and ChromeOS will automatically install the required driver.
If it doesn’t auto-detect
Choose Add manually.
Enter the printer’s IP address (find it on the printer: Setup > Wireless > Network Summary/Network Configuration Page).
For driver, select:
HP > HP Photosmart 6510 series
If this exact model isn’t shown, choose HP Photosmart series (recommended).
About the HP Smart serial number issue
Older printers like the 6510 are not supported by HP Smart on ChromeOS, so manual serial-number entry will always fail.
This is expected behaviour and not a problem with your serial number.
Print a test page
Once added, try printing a simple document from the Chromebook to confirm everything works.
I hope this helps.
