Hi @ElectricPrinter

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the situation—sounds like you're locked out of the admin settings on your HP Envy printer due to a password mismatch, and the device is preventing a factory reset without that password.

Let’s get a clearer picture so I can guide you effectively.

Could you confirm the following details:

  1. Exact model name/number of your HP Envy printer (e.g., Envy 6000e, Envy Inspire 7220e, etc.)
  2. How the printer is currently connected—Wi-Fi, USB, or Ethernet?
  3. Where you're trying to access admin settings—on the printer’s touchscreen, through the HP App, or via the Embedded Web Server (EWS)?
  4. Any other restrictions you're seeing—for example, are you locked out of printing, scanning, or just the settings menu?
  5. Have you ever set up HP+ or enabled Web Services on this printer?

Once I have those details, I’ll walk you through the most direct recovery path.

We're looking forward to helping you get back up and running!

Regards,

Hawks_Eye

Hello. I have an HP Envy 6458e which is connected through Wifi with a static IP. To set up the printer I used the HP App but when adding administrative settings I used the advanced settings webpage on my laptop (with Chrome). There are no restrictions from what I can see to everyday use. I just need to add administrative settings before deploying this into our warehouse environment. No HP+ was not set up on the printer.

Thanks for sharing those details—it really helps narrow things down. Since you're locked out of the Embedded Web Server (EWS) admin settings on your HP ENVY 6458e and can't factory reset due to the forgotten password, here's a focused path to regain access without compromising the printer’s current setup.

Step-by-Step: Recover or Reset Admin Password on HP ENVY 6458e

1. Attempt Password Recovery via EWS

If you set a password via the EWS, and Web Services were not enabled, recovery options are limited—but still worth trying:

  • Open a browser and enter the printer’s static IP (e.g., http://192.168.x.x).
  • Go to Settings > Security > Administrator Settings.
  • If prompted for a password, try:
    • Leaving it blank (some setups allow this).
    • Common typos or variations you may have used.

If unsuccessful, proceed to the next step.

2. Restore Network Settings via Printer Panel

This won’t reset the admin password, but it can help if you want to reconfigure the printer from scratch:

  • On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons together for 5 seconds.
  • This restores network defaults and may allow you to reconfigure the printer via the HP App.

However, this won’t remove the admin password if it was set via EWS.

3. Still Locked Out?

If the above doesn’t work or the service menu isn’t accessible, your best option is to update the firmware using the HP Firmware Update Utility:

Download the firmware for your model here:
HP ENVY 6458e Firmware and Drivers

Run the utility and follow the prompts to update the firmware via USB.

In some cases, this clears the admin password or re-enables reset options.

Let me know how far you get with these steps. Once you’re back in, I can guide you on setting a new admin password safely to avoid future lockouts.

The password recovery with EWS did not work. I tried possible mistakes but it keeps restricting me from trying more than 3 at a time. Resetting the network didnt do anything other than take the static IP address off the printer. Lastly I couldn't install any firmware as it shows the printer is up to ting date. Any other ideas?
