I forgot the administrator credentials for my HP Officejet Pro 8620. How can I recover them?

I can't find a PIN on the printer.

Hi @uwf13

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the situation—forgetting the admin credentials on the HP Officejet Pro 8620 can definitely lock you out of key settings, but there are a couple of ways to reset things and regain access.

🛠️ Option 1: Reset via Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If your printer is still connected to your network:

Find the printer’s IP address:

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, tap the Wireless icon or go to Settings > Network Setup > View Network Details.

Open a browser on your PC and enter the IP address (e.g., http://192.168.1.100).

Navigate to the Security tab > Administrator Settings.

If prompted for a password and you don’t know it, skip to Option 2.

🔄 Option 2: Restore Network Defaults (Resets Admin Password)

This will reset the network settings and clear the admin password:

  1. On the printer’s touchscreen, swipe to Setup (gear icon).
  2. Tap Network Setup.
  3. Tap Restore Network Defaults.
  4. Confirm with Yes.

After this, reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi using the HP Smart app or the touchscreen setup. The admin password will be cleared.

🧼 Option 3: Full Factory Reset (if needed)

If the control panel is locked and you can’t access menus:

  1. Power off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Back and Home buttons (if available) or try Back + Cancel.
  3. While holding, power the printer back on.
  4. Continue holding for 10–15 seconds until the screen flashes or a reset menu appears.

This method varies slightly by firmware version. If it doesn’t work, I can help you try an alternate button combo.

Let me know if your printer is still connected to Wi-Fi or if you’d like help reconnecting it after the reset. You’re doing the right thing by tackling this now—it’ll save you a lot of hassle later.
