Well, its been over a month now since I installed win 7 64 bit and installed the supposed win 7 64 bit driver package from HP for my photosmart C5550.

I've tried every custom solution posted on these forums from deinstalling drivers, reinstalling them, removing printers, etc, etc...  Same result.  Printer is installed with nice green checkmark to it.  Try to print, it disappears from the queue never to be heard from again.  Funny how it worked just fine with Vista 64 bit, the previous OS on the same computer.

From the volume of posts and thread started at the HP support forum the same as mine, I take this is not an isolated incident, but effecting a great many of HP printer owners.  I guess HP will get around to addressing this problem sometime over the next couple years.

Could be longer since HP appears to not even want to admit there is a problem by burying any mention of driver problems with win 7 back here deep within the support forum.

Thank you HP for turning this device I bought less than a year ago into a pretty paper weight sitting on my desk.  How many years/months did you know that Win 7 32/64 versions were coming out and build drivers that would actually work with it?

Or was all that outsourced or scaled back due to downsizing your work force?

I've been a loyal purchaser of HP products for years, but I think that relationship is coming to a quick end.  Wait, don't tell me.  Your going to blame this on Microsoft, even though you've had over a year of pre-release betas and RCs to develop functioning driver packages for your current products.

Hi JonW - I'm having the same problem - here's my data:

  • Which version did you start with ? Brand new machine (home build), but briefly installed XP Home (32 bit) and it worked
  • Which version of Windows 7 did you end up installing ? Win7 64 Bit
  • What hp printer was installed in old version of windows?  Deskjet 710c (parallel port)
  • Where did the installed software for the printer come from?  With Windows, downloaded with WinUpdate 16/12/09
  • How is the printer connected to your PC ? Parallel port - I've also tried through a network print server with no success, but it works with 32-bit versions of Windows and Mac OSX over the network.
  • Any other printers installed on your PC? No
  • Lastly the version of the printer driver that is currently installed that will not enable you to print?  There is no "about" tab on my view of the printer properties, however please see my note below.

I've already raised this with Microsoft and they believe it's caused by the following function based on the details in the event log.

HPVSCP50!SwathCutter::SelectFormat

I've taken a look at the HPVSCP50.dll file and it appears to have the following version numbers:

File version 1.0.0.6

Product version 6.0.5349.0

The error in the log reads:

Faulting application name: spoolsv.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bd3d1 Faulting module name: HPVSCP50.DLL, version: 1.0.0.6, time stamp: 0x4431bcd4 Exception code: 0xc000041d Fault offset: 0x0000000000010af7 Faulting process id: 0x27c Faulting application start time: 0x01ca7dbf1722983a Faulting application path: C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\spool\DRIVERS\x64\3\HPVSCP50.DLL Report Id: 567b9acc-e9b2-11de-9784-002618ac3c1a

If I change settings to print directly to the printer, I get the error "Function discovery print provider DLL has stopped working".  I've tried the workaround of removing the driver and re-installing without success.  I've also reinstalled windows from scratch without any other drivers / software installed.  Still no joy.

Any input gratefully received - if not, I hope it helps your investigations!  (Meanwhile, I'll be buying another printer...)

Kind regards,

David

Hi Jon...

I'm ripping my brains out over this same problem.  Here's the scoop.

Updated my laptop from Vista Home Premium to W7 Ultimate 32 bit

Kept my HP Photosmart 7280

Plugged in USB...printer recognized....but no printing

Went on website/found W7/32 bit offerings...installed full package.

First try by USB...

Using "solution center" the printer prints a test page...but nothing from any other program.

On a W7 ultimate desktop with the same 7280 as a wireless network printer...printer works fine!  Downloaded the same w7 32 bit drivers about 10 days ago on this computer.

I uninstalled and reinstalled 4 times.over the last 3 days..still nothing...tried installing wireless and USB...each time I got a green check mark...each time the hp solution center finds the printer...ink levels, etc.  I also installed the printer diagnostic utility which shows all green as well...but won't print in any but the "test page" program.  (green is the new red for 2010?).

Tried the laptop with an officejet 7210 (my son's)...and no problem....

So...I changed the driver to officejet 7210...and the laptop prints on the 7280...but I don't get the nice interface I usually get with "printer properties"...the borderless printing, etc.  (the interface is the one from the 7210...not as user friendly...old style...and can't quite get a borderless print to come out of the printer properly...but at least I can print basic documents)....

So, the AIO driver package isn't supporting the 7280 photosmart properties....(scanner works by the way).

I'm in the process of reinstalling for the 5th time...I'll get the driver info once reinstalled.

I've been at this for 3 days....I'm better at my day job as an ENT Doc.

Thanks for any help...

Lonny

followup with additional info...

uninstalled the software again...

plugged in USB....AIO 7280 was recognized....drivers installation begins...

If you click here to view progress all aspects of the AIO get green checks except for the "photosmart 7200 series"....

apply a fix doesn't work...

Hp printer diagnostics says there's no driver installed

When you locate the AIO in the printers folder, you can right click it, but there are no printer properties available to update driver with....

So, I'm going to install the AIO full package for the 5th time....then I can get to the driver properties

More to follow.....

I cannot believe that I have been working on this problem in all of my spare time over the last 3 weeks.  What a waste of time... obviously many hp users are in the same boat as I.  One interesting note though guys... I am running XP Professional SP3 and haven't done anything related to Windows 7.  All of a sudden, just one day my printer that I have really been happy with and haven't had any problems with just suddenly started giving me problems.

I went into my Windows update history and noticed that most of my updates were for Windows Defender around the time that my F4180 began acting up.  I believe that I first started having problems on December 1st, the same day I believe this thread was started and in my update history this was the update that was installed on November 30th:

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.71.346.0)

Hopefully this may be a common thread....

So does everyone else have Windows Defender installed???  I'm going to uninstall it ASAP because it never has been helpful and just hogged up memory anyway.

I couldn't find where Windows Defender was installed.  I am on XP Pro SP3.  I would love to uninstall so my printer will print from my PC again!
