I sent an HP firmware update to my HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w Printer which apparently failed. Now I can't connect to the printer with either of the computers that formerly could, with either wireless or USB connection. Can I have instructions or a link to somehow factory reset the printer or undo the failed firmware update?

Update: I gave up on printer and gave it away in case someone else could figure out how to fix it. They sent me a picture showing that one of the chips was discolored and likely ruined. I don't know if it was just a coincidence that the chip got fried when I tried the firmware update, or perhaps when update failed it fried chip, or maybe even the printer got by with the fried chip until I tried the update. Anyway, my advice with this printer would be:
1) If you do a firmware update, do it with a wired connection to reduce the chance of a dropped connection messing up the update.
2) Don't do a firmware update at all if the printer is out of warranty as it seems that HP is unwilling to stand behind their updates (and if you look around this forum you will see multiple other instances where a printer stopped working after a firmware update was attempted.)
For what it is worth I got a replacement Canon printer for a comparable price that has a network cable and so far has had none of the countless printer not found messages that I had via both USB and WiFi connection with my HP printer before it died.

Hi @ssimkin ,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the frustration you're facing with the failed firmware update on your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w Printer. there are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
1. Power Cycle the Printer:
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer.
- Wait for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn the printer back on.
2. Reset Network Settings:
- On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button and the Cancel button together for about 5 seconds until the Wireless light starts blinking.
- This will reset the network settings. After the reset, try reconnecting the printer to your network.
3. Update Firmware Again:
- If you're able to connect the printer to your computer via USB, you can try updating the firmware again. Download the latest firmware from the HP support website and follow the instructions carefully.
4. Flash Firmware Using USB (if available):
- Some HP printers allow firmware updates through a USB connection. If your printer has a USB port, check the user manual for instructions on updating the firmware using a USB drive.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.-

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately the printer is still stuck in the same non-working state. See details below.
1. I had already tried this a number of times.
2. I had high hopes for the Wireless + Cancel button combo but it didn't seem to change anything, and the wireless button never started to blink.
3. The printer to computer connection via USB connection is still broken/unavailable, so I was not able to do this.
4. The MFP M29w printer only has the squarish USB cable connection, not the standard USB connection, so I was not able to connect a USB drive this away.
Any other suggestions?

I went to the private message (copied below in case it is useful to others since it was not specific to my situation). When I clicked on the link I never saw the "Still need help" option nor a phone number. Is that because I am past the short one year warranty (the printer is two years old)? If one was to pay for out of warranty repair what would the contact be for that? Side note: HP charging customers to fix problems created by a firmware update that HP supplied does not sound like a great way to build customer loyalty.
Copy of direct message below:
"I would request you to contact our Phone Support Team and our Support Engineers should be able to sort this out.
Please use the following link to create a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
- Step 1. Open link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
- Step 2. Sign in / sign in as a guest
- Step 3. Enter the product number or select auto-detect
- Step 4. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
- Step 5. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number and the phone number appears.
Note: Out-of-warranty product repair will cost.
Keep me posted on further assistance. Hope that helps!

Elsewhere on this forum on 02-12-2022 in response to user Rderep regarding forum topic "M28W bricked" it sounds like a solution was provided. I have almost exactly the same problem for my M29W printer. The link to "https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/ready2dl/HP_Laserjet_Pro_M28_M31_Multifunction_series_FW_U..." no longer seems to be accessible ("not found" when I click on it). Does this file exist somewhere else, and/or is there some other file that I can send via the usbsend command to resolve my issue with a firmware update that was perhaps corrupted due to an intermittent connection between computer and printer? Again, many, many thanks in advance for any help that you can provide in resolving this software problem that it seems others have experienced as well following attempted installation of recommended firmware updates.
