HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28a Printer

MY printer is an HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M28a without wi-fi.

Scanning has always worked with zero problems until now. However, as of today, I can no longer view an image of the scan.

Accordingly I tried to carry out the firmware update 20210121 from official hp web site. The upgrade finished correctly with a Yellow smile.

After that, when I switching on the printer I have always the LEDs "READY" and "Attention" lights ON.
Now I'm not able to do nothing.
The "HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M28a" now is not recognized by the "device manager".

With HP scan doctor now It is recognized like a "RBX-LOAD" printer and it doesn't comunicate via USB port.
What can I do in order to solve the problem ?

Welcome to the HP support community.

Which operating system is installed on the computer to which this printer is connected?

Perform root level uninstallation to remove all the printer related software's.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • Restart the PC again.

Download and install the printer using the HP Smart app

I have tried step by step your indications without success.

After removing HP printer and drivers, I restarted windows and I have installed HP SMART from your link.

However I did not find my printer LASER JET PRO MFP M28a (WITHOUT WI-FI)  and the HP SMART has indicated to install HP EASY START.

With HP EASY START I found a printer HP RBX-LOAD that it is not my printer.

It seems that the printer is in a state of “block/no answer” because when I’m switching on the printer I do not have the normal start up of the printer with the flashing of LEDs.

When I’m switching on the printer, after few seconds, I have immediately the LEDs “ON” and “ATTENTION” lights on fix. Without any flashing. See attached picture.

Thank you in advance for your helping.

Hi,

I couldn't find factory reset steps and I didn't try to contact HP.
My solution:
Reprogramming the MX25L12835F Flash Memory IC and 4128BWP EEPROM IC on the formatter board. Writing the .bin files (https://file.remont-aud.net/comment/files/05-03-22-13-04-26_m28.rar) to the two ICs using the CH341A USB programmer + AsProgrammer software. (Or replacing the formatter board, but that is more expensive.)
After reprogramming the ICs, the printer no longer indicated an error (Attention LED does not light), only the ON LED blinks continuously and the PC identified the printer as an HP LaserJet 3020.
I installed the printer with Generic /Text Only driver and then installed the factory firmware update (version 20210121) downloaded from the HP site.
After that, the PC correctly identified the printer (HP LaserJet MFP M28-M31), printing and scanning work perfectly.
