Same thing has happened to me. Printing works, scanning (using Imge Capture) says "Scanner reported an error: an error occurred while communicating with your scanner".
I found a half-baked workaraound for this by installing HP Smart from the App Store. Scanning DOES work with this app for my Officejet Pro 6970, but the interface is horribly clunky and it lacks significant features I need. For example, you *can't do* an arbitrary rotation adjustment as is possible in Image Capture. I need this because the crappy HP multifunction doesn't scan anything straight - it's always off by 1.5 degrees rotation. Oops.
Hope this helps.

I experienced the same problem immediately after updating to Sonoma 14.2, but i must admit that I didn't use the HP 6970 (which has the scanning problem) after updating to Sonoma 14, since I was away from it due to traveling.
I tried every possible suggestion in the HP forums (and there are many on this subject, dating back years) and in the end it boiled down to:
- remove ALL HP software (by any means necessary, going through Containers, /Library, ~/Library, etc...)
- restart Macbook Air M2
- empty bin
Then there are 2 choices, either use the Mac control panel in System Preferences, or HP Easy Start (misnomer par excellence, that one) to install the printer drivers.
In the first case, I get a "file not found" when trying to use the Overview in Image Capture.
In the second case, the cursor keeps spinning until I get an error "Overview scan timed out".
I'm not blaming this on HP, there is clearly something that the Sonoma update screwed up, since my Macbook Pro running Sierra has no problem scanning. But if Apple doesn't come forward with a fix, I have to pin my hopes on HP.
And no, like another poster here, I can't be helped with HP "Easy" Scan, thank you.

Thought I was going mad, Reinstalled the printer several time. Both HP Easy Scan and MAC control panel start a scan supposedly but that's all they do. Thankfully I still have an Intel MAcBook Pro, I have kept it because I have found so many annoyances running Apple Silicon.
