HP Deskjet 1010 Printer

I just installed a brand new (which my deceased husband purchased about 9 years ago) HP Desk Jet 1010 printer. I never opened the box until today because my HP Desk Jet 2210 that we had owned since about 2010 or so was still working fine.

The set-up went smoothly until the end, when it kept telling me to align the cartridges, but then it would not print out an alignment page.  I get the message:  "Printing alignment page ...," then "Alignment page unable to print."  My 2210 had a scanner table, which the 1010 does not, so I'm not sure how cartridge alignment is supposed to be accomplished without scanning the alignment page that normally prints out every time I change cartridges.

At one point I got a message saying there was no connection to the printer, but the ether cable from the printer to the Windows 7 laptop appears to be still working, as the laptop alerts me every time I unplug and replug it.

When I attempt to print a page, the printer SOUNDS like it is doing all the right things, but when it spits out a piece of paper, it is totally blank, so I cannot even tell if the cartridges are well enough aligned for my purposes, or not.

I have removed and reinserted the toner cartridges, but that does not help.

Any ideas for how to get the cartridges to align & print?  I am on a very limited budget and really do not want to buy another printer.
