I am using Windows 11 with HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v7.1.0) printer drive.
The default printing shortcuts "Factory Defaults" paper size is Letter and I changed it to A4.My custom setting
When I switch to other printing shortcuts (Default or other custom shortcuts) and then switch back to the A4 print shortcut, all the settings in this shortcut will change back to the default (Paper sizes, paper source, print on both sides...etc )
But If I click cancel to leave the Preferences page and open again, all my custom settings are still here without change.
May I know how can solve this issue?

Hi @HM451,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with your printer settings not retaining changes when you switch between different printing shortcuts on your HP printer using Windows 11. Here’s a step-by-step approach to possibly resolve this issue:
Update Printer Driver:
- Ensure that your HP Universal Printing PCL 6 driver is up to date. HP frequently updates their drivers to fix bugs and improve performance.
- Visit the HP website, find your printer model, and check for the latest printer drivers. Download and install if a newer version is available.
Reconfigure Printing Shortcuts:
- Open the printer’s properties:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your HP printer and select Printer properties.
- Navigate to the Printing Shortcuts tab.
- Select the shortcut that you modified (the one with A4 size), make sure all settings are as you want them, and then click Save As to create a new shortcut with a different name. See if using this new shortcut helps retain the settings.
Reset Printer Settings:
- Sometimes, resetting the printer settings can resolve unexpected behavior:
- Go back to the printer properties.
- Under the Advanced tab, you might find an option to reset the printer settings to default. Use this option, then reconfigure your settings.
Check for Software Conflicts:
- Ensure that there is no conflicting printer management software that might be overriding your settings. If there are other printer utilities or management tools installed, they might be affecting the settings.
Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- HP provides a tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor, designed to diagnose and resolve printing problems. Download and run this tool to see if it can fix the issue.
Persistence of Settings:
- Ensure that after setting your preferences, you apply the changes and then properly exit the dialog by clicking OK rather than just closing the window.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Rachel571
Thanks for your reply, I already downloaded the latest version driver v7.1.0 on HP website (Also tested version from PCL v6.6.0 to PCL v7.1.0)
Please share if v7.1.0 not the latest version.
All of your step I already tried but no luck. The paper size still will changed to Letter after switching the printing shortcuts.

Here is what I see with my system. If I go to control panel>devices and printers, right click on the icon for the printer and select "printer properties" from the drop down menu and then go to advanced and select printer defaults. If I change that to A4 (I normally have set for letter), the Factory defaults then shows as Paper Size A4. If i then click on another shortcut that is letter size and then go back to defaults it has changed to letter. But if I go to print a document and check the properties my default is set to A4. It might be some type of non-critical glitch. I say that because the defaults to revert to the correct size when I go to print.
