I bought the printer to use with an Android pad and mobile phone.
The "Smart" software will only allow me to print PDF, Scanned files and online Google Drive and Dropbox.
The printer is used well away from Wi-Fi or any internet connection.
All I want to do is print files direct from folders on storage within the phone and pad but there doesn't seem to be anyway to do this.
I've never come across such a restriction on printer software before.
Can anyone tell me how I can select a file to print from within a folder on my devices?

Hey there! @FilBrown, Welcome to HP forums.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out. Please answer a few questions below to assist you better.
Did you make any changes to your printer?
Are you able to print from other devices?
Are the printer and smartphone connected to the same wireless network?
Have you tried printing from a different android device does the issue persist?
Let's continue with the troubleshooting steps now.
Uninstall and reinstall the latest version of HP smart app from play store and check if it helps.
Try the steps recommended below.
Uninstall the app from your smartphone and install the app again.
-
Make sure your Android device is connected to the same wireless network that your current printer is connected to, or that you want to connect a new printer to.
-
On your Android device, download and install the HP Smart app (in English) from the Google Play Store.
-
After installation, open the app, and then tap Start.
-
Accept the terms and conditions, and then tap Continue.
-
Tap the plus sign
on the app home screen.
The app searches for printers connected to the network.
-
If you have one or more printers already connected to the wireless network, tap the printer you want to use.
-
If you are setting up a new printer on the network, tap Add Printer or Set up a new printer, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the printer setup.
NOTE:
If you have an Android OS 7 (Nougat) and later device and are unable to complete the printer setup, turn off cellular data temporarily, and then try again.
-
If the smart app works on a different smartphone, it is an issue with your smartphone. Reset the smartphone back to factory settings and check if it helps.
Step 1: Close and reopen the printer app
Close the printer app, and then reopen the printer app.
Try to use the printer app. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Try to use the printer app later
Try to use the printer app later when HP Web Services is available.
If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Confirm your printer is connected to the wireless network
If your printer is not connected to an active Internet connection, printer apps do not work. Make sure the printer is connected to a wireless network with an active Internet connection.
Lastly, try the steps recommended below.
I would suggest try clearing the app cache on your smartphone and check if it helps.
Step 1: Head to the Settings menu. This can be done by tapping the cog icon in your notification shade.
Step 2: Find Apps (or Applications, depending on your device) in the menu, then locate the app that you want to clear the cache or data for.
Step 3: Tap on Storage and the buttons for clearing the cache and app data will become available
If the issue still persists try installing the app on a different smartphone and check if it working.
If it is working on a different smartphone, try updating your smartphone to the latest version or try restoring the smartphone back to factory settings.

Hi
None of your suggestions have made a difference.
The problem lies with the app itself.
You cannot browse folders to select a file to print. You cannot select a file within the app unless it is a:
A scanned image
It's sourced from Google Drive or Dropbox
How do I select a file (.doc or. txt) to print which is stored on my device?
Regards

@FilBrown, Thanks for your prompt response and time.
There is no option print from the device memory.
Also, I have checked the smart app specifications and please find the supported file formats by the HP smart app.
-
Android: JPG, PNG, PDF
-
Apple iOS: JPG, PNG, PDF, DOC, PPT, XLS
-
Windows 10: JPG/JPEG, PNG, BMP, PDF, PPTX, DOCX, XLSX
The file format you are trying to print from your Android device is not supported by the app.
Use a different app from play store to print Doc file format.

The fact that the app cannot browse for files is clearly a major weakness. We get that it only prints certain file types, we get that one must be connected. The problem we're having is that the file we want to print is not in one of the very few places you've exposed in your app. You desperately need to expose the ability to browse the file hierarchy
