HP ENVY Photo 6230 All-in-One Printer
macOS 26.0 Tahoe

After updating my printer driver, I keep getting notifications (like 30-40 each morning!) that my ink cartridge is running low on ink and I should order a replacement. I was unable to find any setting to cancel this and eventually removed the HP Utility software - but the messages keep coming. Rather than deleter up to 40 such prompts of my screen, it was is quicker to reboot my Mac, then I noticed a pop-up stating "Print Centre" interrupted restart.

Any idea on how to resolve?

Hello @Von_B52, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for describing the issue in detail. Receiving dozens of HP ENVY Photo 6230 low ink notifications every day after updating the printer driver can certainly be concerning. Since the notifications continue even after removing HP Utility, it is possible that the printer settings or the macOS print system still retains the notification configuration from the previous installation.

This behavior can occur if printer settings or the print system become corrupted after a driver update. Restoring the printer to its factory defaults and reinstalling the HP software removes stored configuration data that may be triggering repeated status notifications.

1. Restore the Printer to Factory Defaults

Restoring the printer resets its internal settings and clears configuration changes that may have been introduced after the driver update.

  1. On the printer control panel, touch Setup.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Tap Restore Factory Defaults.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.

After the reset, reconnect the printer to your network if prompted.

2. Reinstall the HP Printer Software

A clean installation ensures that macOS and the printer are using fresh driver files instead of potentially corrupted components.

  1. Uninstall the existing HP printer software and drivers from your Mac.
  2. Restart your Mac.
  3. Download and install the latest software and drivers for your HP ENVY Photo 6230 from the official HP support website. HP ENVY Photo 6230 All-in-One Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
  4. Add the printer again using the newly installed software.

After restoring the printer and performing a clean driver installation, the repeated low ink notifications should stop, and Print Center should no longer generate excessive background alerts or interfere with restarting your Mac.

If the notifications continue after completing these steps, please let us know:

  • Whether the printer is connected via Wi-Fi or USB.
  • Whether the notifications appear only when the printer is powered on or even while it is turned off.
  • Whether the messages are generated by Print Center, HP Smart, or another HP background process.

This information will help determine whether the issue is related to the printer firmware, the HP software, or the macOS print system.

Have a great day!

I'm an HP Employee.
