Seen lots of reviews that say it is better to turn off automatic firmware updates. They claim that even genuine HP ink cartridges  sometime stop working. So I want to turn the auto update off.

Tried the screen on printer and get to firmware menu and : -

1) there is no indication if auto update is set or not and

2) no option to change it

Tried using the printer's IP address to access the firmware update and the options are there. They show that, "Install updates automatically (Recommended)" is set on it and the other two options to turn off or get alerts are greyed out.  HP screen shot.png

I should also say that I uninstalled printer, drivers, and HP Smart. Restarted PC and Wi-Fi router then reinstalled everything. The only change was that the printer screen did say that the firmware update was set to auto, but gave no option to change it.

Several hours of frustrating fiddling for nothing. Any suggestions how I can turn off Auto Updates - please.

Hi @GEPC

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you woud like to turn off the Auto Firmware Updates as you are unable to turn off!! I would request you to please follow the steps:

From the Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Open a browser and enter your printer’s IP address (e.g., http://192.168.1.100).
  • Log in (if prompted).
  • Navigate to Settings → Printer Update → Firmware Update Settings.
  • Uncheck or disable Automatic Updates.
  • Save changes and restart the printer.

On Windows 11 (HP Software)

On macOS

  • Open the HP App (new replacement for HP Smart).
  • Go to Settings → Printer Update.
  • Turn off Automatic Updates or switch to Manual.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
