Hi @ToastysDad,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see you need help with the firmware update. May I know if the wifi is a private network?  Please make sure you connect with a private network.

Also, May I Know do you get any specific errors regarding the update?

Checking the Web Services internet connection

  • Use the HP Smart app or the printer homepage to manage the connection and turn it on if necessary.
  • Connect the printer to your network router, and make sure there is an active internet connection.:
  • Web Services only work when the printer is connected to the internet, either over Wi-Fi or with an Ethernet cable. A USB-only connection is not supported.
  • Choose one of the following methods to open the advanced settings for your printer.
  • HP Smart app: Click the image of your printer to open the settings and management tools, and then click Advanced Settings under Settings.
  • Printer EWS: Open the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS) using the printer IP address.
  • From the settings or EWS home page, click the Web Services tab.
  • If you are prompted to log in or enter the printer PIN, enter admin for the username (HP LaserJets only), enter the PIN from the printer label, and then click Submit or OK. This label is typically located inside the cartridge access area or printer door.
  • Location of the PIN on the printer label
  • Check the information on the Web Services tab.
  • If a summary screen displays, Web Services is enabled.
  • If a setup screen displays, click Continue or Enable, and then follow the instructions to turn on Web Services.
  • CLICKING CONTINUE ON THE WEB SERVICES TAB (MOST HP PRINTERS)
  • Clicking Continue on the Web Services tab
  • CLICKING ENABLE ON THE WEB SERVICES TAB (HP LASERJET PRINTERS)
  • Clicking Enable on the Web Services tab
  • If Start Pairing displays, your printer uses a different process to enable Web Services and pair the printer to your HP account.

Once done please try updating the firmware using the link below: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
