I have just replaced my wonderful OfficeJet Pro 7740 with the newer 9730e version, and the auto shutdown doesn't work. I have studied the question online, and found that, with what seems like almost any connections, the auto shutdown won't work. This is very inconvenient for me, because with the 7740, I had the shutdown set of 10 P.M., and for years, I relied on that to turn the printer off. Apparently I no longer do that, so I have to remember to turn it off manually, and I hate that this option has been removed. Of course, I have read all the explanations of which network connections that you can have and still have the automatic shutdown work, but why should I have to go through all that, when I simply want the printer to turn off at a specific time?

I rarely answer "why should I" challenge questions -- therein lies finger pointing and possible "he said, they said" accusations.

I offer the following FYI as a possible solution.

According to the documentation, the printer supports on / off schedules.

Product NameHP OfficeJet Pro 9730e Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Energy Savings Feature TechnologySchedule On and Schedule Off

A quick check does not show the Schedule setting described in the user guide.

?

No, I do not know whether this is because the setting does not exist as claimed or whether the information is simply missing from the guide.

Try / Consider

Open your Browser

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section General > Power Settings > Energy Settings / Power Schedule

Example - EWS - Power Management -- Schedule

① → ② → ③ → ⑥ → ⑦

The suggested solution using the EWS doesn't work, because the power on and power off options do not appear, only the sleep and the shutdown after a time interval that doesn't work.

Understood --

One more try...

Does seem odd.

The options that are displayed in your EWS should work as designed.

That they do not do so AND that options that are listed as supported on the printer do not display at all suggests (to me) that something else is going on.

If the Firmware is in need of an update, take care of that.

Open your Browser

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section General > Firmware Update > Firmware Information > History / Check for Update

Section General > Firmware Update > Firmware Update Settings

-- Important –-

Read the Note regarding Firmware update choices.

-- What else? --

If not done AND if you are prepared to configure the printer from "scratch",

perhaps restore the printer to Factory defaults.

Open your Browser

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section General > Restore Default Settings > Restore All Factory Defaults

EWS_9135_Restore_All_Factory_Defaults_6EWS_9135_Restore_All_Factory_Defaults_6

-- What else? --

Not sure, I've not used the printer -- my own 9135e is similar though (of course) it does not support the larger paper.  Perhaps someone who has used the 9730e -- or has at least seen one -- might be better able to help.

My EWS menu shows this, and nothing more. There is no mention of scheduling on or off in the user guide. I have checked, and found that my software is up to date.

It appears to me that the option of scheduled on/off has been eliminated for the 9730e.

I appreciate your efforts to help, but unless HP changes the options, I don't think there is a solution

So sad.

It's not the first time I've come across documentation for this printer that does not match what people report seeing.

Unfortunately, you are right -- unless the option displays, there is no solution of which I'm aware.

I will report the discrepancy - Perhaps naught will come of reporting it (we are outside of HP proper) -- It's worth the effort, at least.

It's a nice printer, I'm sorry it won't do what you want and need.
