I have had my HP printer for just over a year, and have only recently had a requirement to hand feed medium.

I set the printer to manual feed, but if I try to print a multi page file, the printer waits for me to set it going with the first sheet, but, on going onto the second, it will wait 3 seconds, then print from the default paper tray.

This is a. not nearly long enough and b. requires me to submit pages one at a time from the printing program.

Very irritating and was certainly not a problem with my previous printer (also an HP).

Does anyone know if it is possible to change this behaviour so that the printer will wait indefinitely for each page medium to be manually offered?

Thanks.

I reviewed your post and I understand that when you manual feed the paper it is taking time to pick up and feed the paper.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you update the printer firmware following the steps in the below article and check if it helps.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Thanks for your reply.

There are now a number of issues here.

First: the problem I outlined is not quite as you state. The problem is, when I ask for manual feed, the printer correctly waits for me to insert the print medium into the front slot.  However, if there is a second page, the printer waits for just 3 seconds, then picks up paper from the default tray, INSTEAD of waiting for me to feed in the second and any subsequent sheets.

Second: I had already updated the firmware (in response to your notice concerning a vulnerablity) to 20200612 which was the latest at the time.

However, this time on your advice, I checked for a later update and found 20201021 so uploaded it to the machine.  However, on initialisation, it then objected to communication with the black cartride, which was the only third party cartridge.

I appreciate that's not your fault, but it does mean, if I want to print in the shoort term, I have to return to 20200612 until I can purchase an HP cartridge.

In the meantime, I'd be glad if you can confirm you can replicate my printer's errant behavious and that I haven't been sold a rougue machine.

Thanks

Jim.

There are some unsavoury posts circulating on other media that the problem with the latest .firmware for my printer is an attempt by HP to exclude third party cartridges.

Would you care to comment?

It is the expected behavior and the printer will not wait for the subsequent sheets. You need to feed the paper before starting the print job. The printer will wait only when you are duplexing.

I hope that answers your question.

Hi Again.

I was about to take issue with your latest post, but, just beforehand, suffered a paper jam on the printer and, in freeing it, I took out the bottom of the tray for feeding individual sheets (Tray 1?).

When I replaced it, the printer started to behave exactly as I expected.

Since I had only used manual feed on a couple of occasions since buying the printer, I can only assume that the tray was slightly out of alignment, causing it to think a sheet of paper had been fed in.

Now, on manual feed, it waits for each individual sheet as expected.

I feel embarrassed that I didn't find this earlier and have wasted your time.

Perhaps I ought to have changed the title to: "Behaviour Not as Expected ... Ooops"!   😉

Thanks for your help, anyway.

Best wishes

Jim.
