Microsoft Windows 11

When I plugged in a Photosmart B110a into my Windows 11 machine it detected and installed the drivers right away. While printing and scanning is generally possible with that class driver it is missing an option to turn on borderless printing. When searching for the driver there is only a link to instructions on how to use drivers which are provided with the OS:

Is there any way to obtain the original full features HP driver for this model that came on the CD that was delivered with it (which I unfortunately do not have anymore)? Alternatively, is there a way to turn on borderless printing with the generic (?) driver that comes with Windows 11 using normal (not photo) A4 paper?

Edit: I tried using the HP Print & Scan Doctor, by the way but it does not seem to work on my machine. There is a process "HPPrintScanDoctorService.exe" but it seems to be just idling.

Unfortunately, the Photosmart printer software is not available - not for Windows "anything" and certainly not Windows 11.

HP pulled (removed) the software for this and similarly aged printers a while ago.

I cannot suggest any alternative printing software - everything of which I'm aware requires that the full feature software be installed as a "foundation" for the third party print software.  That opinion does  not mean anything - I don't have any old printers on which that assumption can be tested -- I could be wrong.

Not sure why the Doctor does not run at all.  Regardless, it would not make any difference in this case.

The Doctor does not understand the issue and cannot provide software that it cannot find.

The version of the doctor software won't change the outcome.

You might be able to find the software "somewhere" on the Internet.

Please be aware:

  • Grabbing anything from the Internet can be fraught with risk (possibly not safe).
  • Because the printer is / was / never will be compatible with Windows 11, any software you do find might not run even in compatibility mode.

I guessed that it might be like you described. Anyway, thank you for your detailed answer!

I did indeed find some non-HP sources for the original driver but wanted to avoid it for the reasons you mentioned. Maybe I'll try running them through a virus/malware detection tool first and if that comes back negative I'll try it in a sandboxed environment.

In general it's a bit disappointing that HP removed the driver completely. They could at least provide it without support for people being able to at least try if it works or not. After all, the printer/scanner still works perfectly fine so I see no reason to replace it. And then, printer makers profit mostly from selling ink, not printers, if I'm not mistaken 😉

You are welcome.

HP typically offers most printer drivers long after they are no longer eligible for upgrades or further development.

At some point, that support is always withdrawn at the discretion of the company.

Why is driver software removed?

Could be that the driver is unusable, could be a security risk - could be "anything" - those of us outside of HP are not in on the decision process.

No idea about profit margins on ink - I suspect you are right.

Perhaps printers in the future won't depend on this archaic method to put print to paper.

?

What else?

At "retirement" all HP documentation for the product is removed.

The exception:  The retired product series will be listed in the "Retired Products" document.

If you plan on keeping the printer, do download and save whatever is available and that you wish to keep on hand.
