I have owned HP printers for many years, several in succession. I wanted the lineal successor to my last and very good but well used and ailing printer, a LaserJet M203dw Printer; I was told that this 3001dw printer is it.

I should mention that this printer is installed recently on a brand-new Windows 11 computer that as yet has very little software installed (this of course will change). My internet connection is hard-wired, not wireless, and so far does not include a VPN. Finally, I always have preferred a USB and not a wireless printer connection to the computer.

There are three vexing issues I really would appreciate some help in solving:

1. The HP system clearly has screwed up and insists that the printer serial number is something other than what is actually imprinted on the product plate. This has made it virtually impossible to do anything but go around in circles trying to get any help from HP support.

2. I cannot get default printer settings to remain as I set them. I specifically have been trying to change the factory default from duplex printing to one-side printing only.

3. I have loaded custom print modes---a message pops up declaring that they have been downloaded---but none show up under Print Quality. What are they, and where are they?

Thank you in advance for any light that can be shed on these matters.

Hello Scumston,

Thank you for posting your concern,

Thank you for providing more details about your setup. Here's how you can ensure your HP LaserJet 3001dw works efficiently with your Windows 11 computer using a USB connection:

Setting Up HP LaserJet 3001dw with USB Connection

  1. Connecting the Printer:

    • Connect the HP LaserJet 3001dw to your Windows 11 computer using a USB cable. Make sure that the cable is securely connected to both the printer and the computer.
  2. Driver Installation:

    • Visit the HP Support website to download the latest printer drivers that are compatible with Windows 11.
    • Install the drivers by following the on-screen instructions, ensuring that the printer is connected when prompted during the installation process.
  3. Printer Configuration:

    • Upon successful installation of drivers, configure the printer settings according to your preferences. This includes setting up default print options, paper size, and print quality.
  4. Testing the Connection:

    • Print a test page to confirm that the USB connection and drivers are working correctly.
  5. Networking Options:

    • Since your internet connection is hard-wired and you prefer not using wireless or VPNs, ensure that your network settings do not interfere with the USB connection.
    • If needed, disable any network printing options that you do not wish to use.

Advantages of HP LaserJet 3001dw

  • Improved Printing Speed and Quality: Compared to older models, the 3001dw offers faster print speeds and higher quality output.
  • USB Connectivity: Provides a reliable and secure connection without the complexities of network setup.
  • Easy Integration with Windows 11: The printer is designed to seamlessly integrate with modern operating systems, including Windows 11, ensuring you have access to HP's latest features and updates.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue with your printer's serial number. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this situation:

Steps to Resolve Serial Number Discrepancy

  1. Double-Check the Serial Number:

    • Verify the serial number on the physical product plate of your printer. Ensure that it is entered correctly, paying attention to similar-looking characters (e.g., the letter 'O' vs. the number '0').
  2. Accessing the Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):

    • If your printer allows, access the Embedded Web Server through your computer's web browser by entering the printer’s IP address. Navigate to the section where the serial number is displayed to confirm what the system is recognizing.
  3. Printer Firmware Update:

    • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes updating the firmware can resolve discrepancies or errors in system information.
  4. HP Support Contact:

    • If issues persist, consider contacting HP support for assistance. Explain the discrepancy clearly and provide them with both the physical serial number and the one the system is recognizing.
    • Use alternative methods of contact such as HP’s online chat, email support, or phone support to directly connect with an HP representative.
  5. Documentation:

    • Keep a record of your interactions with HP support, including any case numbers, email correspondences, and phone call details, as this can be useful for follow-ups.
  6. Check for Software or Driver Errors:

    • Occasionally, drivers or software can misreport hardware information. Reinstalling these might help rectify the serial number issue.

I hope these steps help you to resolve the issue. If the problem continues, seeking direct assistance from an HP support representative would be the best course of action. They may be able to correct the data mismatch on their end.
