HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

We had this printer just sitting in storage, brand new & unused. We are now trying to set it up but we keep getting this message, despite the fact that we are using the cartridges that came with the device. I have been trying everything I can to bypass the error, but it seems like only HP can help. PLEASE HELP -- we really need to print off some things before a trip.

Hi @warnferk,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this can be, especially before a trip. You're seeing a cartridge error on your HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer with macOS 12 Monterey, even though you're using the original setup cartridges. especially with new printers left unused for a long time, and it typically relates to the printer’s setup mode or expired cartridges.

Please try the steps shared below and let me know if this helps.

1. Make Sure You Are Using the Setup Cartridges

  • The ENVY 5055 requires special "Setup" cartridges for the initial printer setup.
  • These cartridges will have "Setup" printed on the label.
  • If you're using non-setup or replacement cartridges, the printer will reject them until setup is completed with the original setup ink.

🟡 If your setup cartridges are missing or expired, you will need to bypass the setup.

2. Power Cycle & Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cable from the wall and the printer.
  • Wait for 1–2 minutes.
  • Reconnect and power it back on.
  • Try reinstalling the setup cartridges again.

3. Use the HP Smart App for Setup

If the setup was incomplete or failed previously, the HP Smart app may trigger it again properly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
