I have a HP Officejet Color MFP x585 connected via USB cable to a HP EliteDesk 800 G1 Tower. I cannot get the printer to scan to the printers USB port (located to the left of the printers display screen).I ran HP Print and Scan Doctor and got "this tool unable to solve the problem. I have reset the printer to factory settings. I have removed and reinstalled the printer driver on the computer. The printer's Configuration Page shows "LAN error - Loss of Carrier". The printer does print in windows and will print from email. The printer's display screen does not show any options for scanning. The PC is connected to wifi.

Hi @SteveLeBard,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're having trouble with scanning functionality on your HP OfficeJet Color MFP X585 printer, particularly with the USB port connection. Here’s a detailed guide to help you resolve this issue:

1. Verify USB Connection

Check USB Cable and Ports:

  • Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and the computer. Try using a different USB cable and port to rule out any issues with the current cable or port.
  • Turn off the printer and the computer. Unplug the USB cable from both ends, wait for about 30 seconds, and then reconnect the cable. Turn on both devices and check if the issue persists.

2. Check Printer's Configuration

  • The "LAN error - Loss of Carrier" message suggests there might be an issue with the network or connectivity settings. Even though you're using a USB connection, it's good to verify if any network-related settings are interfering.
  • Print a configuration page from the printer’s menu to review its status and connectivity settings.
  • If possible, reset the network settings to default on the printer and reconfigure the network settings if needed. This can sometimes clear up connectivity issues.

3. Update and Reinstall Drivers

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Right-click on the HP OfficeJet X585 and select Remove Device. Uninstall any remaining drivers from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for the HP OfficeJet Color MFP X585. Make sure to select the correct operating system.
  • Run the downloaded driver installer and follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the drivers. Choose the USB connection option during the setup.

4. Check Scanner Settings

  • Ensure you have installed the HP software that includes scanning utilities. HP’s Full Feature Software and Drivers package is recommended as it includes scanning features.
  • If you’re using Windows 10/11, try using the HP Scan and Capture app, available from the Microsoft Store. It can often handle scanning tasks better than default Windows tools.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
