This is an annoying little niggle with my new HP Envy - I can turn it off with a (somewhat inaccessible) power button at the back. But I turn of the power to my entire computer system when I'm not using it, and when I turn the power back on again the printer powers up. I don't use the printer very often, and when I turn it off I want it to stay off! I'm sure this will be classed as a "feature" rather than a "bug", but I just thought I'd ask, on the off chance that there's a setting hidden away somewhere.

Hi @DaveMidge,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy printer is turning itself on automatically when you power on your computer system, it might be due to a feature designed to quickly connect the printer when the system is turned on. Here are some steps you can take to prevent this.

Disable Wake-on-USB or Wake-on-LAN:

  • If your printer is connected via USB, check your computer’s BIOS/UEFI settings for a “Wake-on-USB” option. Disabling this may prevent the printer from turning on with the system.
  • Similarly, for network-connected printers, look for a “Wake-on-LAN” setting that can be disabled.

Check Printer Power Settings:

  • Some HP printers have settings within their menu that control power management. Look for any settings related to auto power-on or energy-saving modes, and adjust them as needed.

Use the Printer Control Panel:

  • Access the printer’s control panel to explore any energy-saving settings. Some printers offer options to disable certain auto-on features through their settings menu.

Printer Software:

  • Open the HP Printer Assistant on your computer.
  • Navigate to the "Print and Scan" section.
  • Check for any options related to power management or auto-on settings and modify them accordingly.

Firmware Update:

  • Ensure your printer firmware is up to date, as updates can adjust default settings and resolve such issues.

Physical Power Strip:

  • Consider using a power strip with individual switches. This allows you to turn the power on and off manually for your printer without affecting other connected devices. This may provide a more convenient way to control the power to the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for trying, Raj, but I have looked in all the obvious places. I was hoping I might find someone who had the same printer and might actually know the answer. It looks like it's not possible - it seems like very bad design by HP, IMHO.

Thanks Vikram, but I am convinced that this is just the way it works - irritating but not an actual problem.
