A few weeks ago, my printer stopped printing directly from my desktop (operating MacOs 14.6.1 Sonoma). I can print from my phone and iPad, but not not from my desktop. When I send a doc to the queue or print from browser, the items load up in the queue and will not print. I can use the HP Smart utility, but it is clunky and doesn't allow me to print more than 5 copies at a time. I have:
• Downloaded the latest drivers
• Restarted the printer/computer/wifi in different orders
• Cleaned the printer and updated the toner cartridges
Nothing has worked! Please help. The printer has worked flawlessly for many years, and I don't want to replace it... but I need to be able to hit cmd-P and get it to work!
I am sure this has to do with some sort of interface between my machine and the printer, but I haven't updated my Mac to Sequoia or anything weird...
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi @Wendielu2
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to deal with a printer that was once working perfectly and is now causing issues with direct printing from your Mac. Since the printer works from your phone and iPad, the issue seems to be related to the connection between your Mac desktop and the printer.
Let’s walk through some troubleshooting steps to help resolve this and get your HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw back up and running for direct printing from your Mac.
1. Reset the Printer’s Print Queue
Sometimes the print queue can get stuck, and that might be causing documents to load but not print.
- Clear the print queue:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer (HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw) and click Open Print Queue.
- In the print queue window, click on Delete for any stuck jobs.
After clearing the queue, try printing again to see if the issue persists.
2. Reinstall Printer Drivers
Even though you've downloaded the latest drivers, it’s possible that the installation might not have been successful or something is missing.
- Reinstall the drivers:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select the HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw and click the minus (-) sign to remove it.
- Then, download and install the latest HP drivers for macOS from the HP support page.
- After installation, add the printer back to your list of printers by clicking the plus (+) sign in Printers & Scanners.
3. Check Printer Connection (Wi-Fi/USB)
Ensure your Mac is still connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your printer. If your printer is on a different network or has a new IP address, it may be causing the connection issue.
- Check printer’s Wi-Fi:
- On your printer, ensure it is connected to the correct network (use the printer’s control panel to check).
- Confirm IP Address:
- If you are using a static IP, check to make sure the IP hasn’t changed by checking the printer’s settings. If it has changed, update the printer IP address on your Mac under Printers & Scanners > Options & Supplies > Location.
4. Check for macOS Updates
It’s worth checking if there’s an update for macOS that might include fixes for printer-related issues.
- Check for updates:
- Go to System Preferences > Software Update to see if there are any available updates for macOS that might address compatibility issues with printers.
5. Reset the Printing System on macOS
If the issue is related to a deep system-level error with printing, resetting the printing system may help.
- Reset the printing system:
- Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.Right-click (or Control-click) on the list of printers and select Reset printing system.Confirm the reset. After the reset, add your printer again by clicking the plus (+) sign.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
