HP ENVY 6458e All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I got this printer from a friend who had an account and ink subscription.  He cancelled his account and subscription a year ago, severed all ties to HP printers, and deleted this serial number from his computer.  I set up and registered an HP account and HP Smart app account, but I have a feeling that HP won't accept me as a new owner, since there are zero comments anywhere about new owners.  As indicated in the Subject line, I have tried all the Erasures and Resets of the printer and iMac, stayed lgged in or re-logged in to HP Smart, reconnected WiFi without a problem.  Can't print, copy, or run the scanner bar, brand new HP ink cartridges installed.  Most recent new cartridges on June 9th lasted 68 pages tri-color + B & W XL.  Not going to subscribe to tech support.  Feeling pretty bad about HP right now!

Thanks for sharing the details. You're not alone in facing this issue when inheriting an HP printer previously tied to someone else's Instant Ink account. Here's how to resolve it and get your HP ENVY 6458e All-in-One Printer working properly on macOS 12 Monterey:

1. Factory Reset the Printer

You've mentioned trying resets — just to confirm, here's the full factory reset method:

  • On the printer control panel, press Setup (gear icon).
  • Navigate to Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Confirm the reset and wait for the printer to reboot.

This clears most settings but does not remove Instant Ink Enrollment if it was previously active.


2. Remove HP+ or Instant Ink Lock (if applicable)

If the printer was enrolled in HP+ or Instant Ink, it may be locked to the previous owner’s account.

  • Visit the official HP support page:

  • Scroll to Account & Registration and follow the steps to reclaim ownership.
  • You may need to contact HP Support directly to unlink the printer from the previous account.


3. Set Up with Your HP Account

Once the printer is reset and unlinked:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your Mac.
  • Log in with your HP account.
  • Add the printer using “Set up a new printer”.
  • Enable Web Services and Wi-Fi connection.
