J4500
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I was given a J4500 from a small business and tried to install it but the printer mode is an XPS Document Writer mode. How can I change this printer into a J4580 or get rid of the XPS Document Writer mode it is stuck in?. Thank you.

@jayceejay2nd, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

XPS Document Writer is not related to the printer. it is pre-installed on the computer.

To assist you better, how is the printer connected?

Check the connectivity between the devices.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix any driver issue

Click here to download the file. Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and click on 'Fix printing'.

Click here to download the HP Full-feature driver if not already installed

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks much but now I am confused. My computer is a Dell 550 with Windows 7 64b. I never had any XPS installed in my computer. A fried had a business and when he closed it, gave me his HP J4500 printer so he probably did have the XPS on his computer and likewise with his J4500 printer. Now, I have managed to rid this printer of any XPS wording and through HP guidance "removed wording XPS DocW" so the printer now is named J4500. However, the problem still exists whereas I keep getting a message "computer is unable to communicate with printer".  I finally got it to print but nothing prints (with new 901 cartridges). I asked my friend about it and he told me it was printing fine as of April 10 when he gave it to me. I don't know what else to do but have tried your suggestion and truly appreciate your time. I am disabled so can't get around too much but pray someday I will be able to use this printer. There has to be a solution!

If it says "computer is unable to communicate with printer", this is a connectivity issue between the devices.

Check the USB cable. Connect it to a different port on the computer.

Did you run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool?

If the printer is printing blank pages, try making a standalone copy from the glass and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Check the ink levels. Perform the steps mentioned in this document to resolve print quality issues.

This is a pretty old printer and HP has stopped manufacturing it. It should be out of warranty too. If the printer was not used for more than a week, the ink could have dried up. Cleaning the ink cartridges could help.

If the issue persists, this is a hardware issue either with the ink cartridges or the printer itself. I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers/ink cartridges.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
