HP ENVY 6455e All-in-One Printer

Problem connecting my HP Envy 6400 to my MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.6. I have the HP Smart app. But I’m baffled by the various descriptions in the User Guide. Like, is HP+ different from HP?

Complicating things is that we switched internet providers on the same day (involuntarily, our previous one pulled out of our area) and the service man put in a new router and left us with no instructions!

The laptop works fine for email, Safari, Lightroom, etc. It "sees" the printer but doesn't activate it.

I'm not even sure if the problem is in the printer, the router or the laptop.

I’m a moron about all this stuff, as I’m sure you have guessed.

The post came back with the following:"Your post has been changed because invalid HTML was found in the message body. The invalid HTML has been removed. Please review the message and submit the message when you are satisfied." I have no idea what this means!

Hi @Gallopingphotog,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding connecting your printer to your laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP Envy 6400 printer isn't connecting to your MacBook Pro running macOS Sonoma 14.6, possibly due to your new router. No worries! I'll guide you step by step.

Check If Your Printer is Connected to Wi-Fi

Since you got a new router, your printer is likely still trying to connect to your old Wi-Fi network. You’ll need to reconnect it.

Option 1: Using HP Smart App (Recommended)

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your Mac.
  2. If your printer isn’t listed, click Add Printer.
  3. If it appears but is offline, select it and try Reconnect or Setup Wi-Fi.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to reconnect the printer to your new Wi-Fi.

Option 2: Using the Printer's Wi-Fi Reset & Reconnect

  1. Reset the printer's network settings:
    • Press & hold the Wi-Fi button (or the Wireless + Cancel button together) for 5 seconds.
    • The printer should reset and enter Wi-Fi setup mode.
  2. Now, reconnect the printer to your new Wi-Fi:
    • On your Mac, go to System SettingsWi-Fi.
    • Select "HP-Setup-XYZ" (temporary printer Wi-Fi).
    • Open HP Smart and follow the setup to connect your printer to the correct Wi-Fi.

Remove & Reinstall Printer on Mac

If your Mac sees the printer but won’t print, try removing and adding it again:

  1. Go to: System SettingsPrinters & Scanners.
  2. Select your HP Envy 6400, then click Remove Printer (-).
  3. Click Add Printer, select your HP printer from the list, and click Add.
  4. Try printing a test page.

Check Printer Status

  • If the printer shows Offline, try restarting both your Mac and Printer.
  • If it says "Waiting for Printer to Respond", restart the router and try again.

About HP+ vs. HP

  • HP+ is an optional service that provides additional features like cloud printing and requires original HP ink.
  • Your printer works with or without HP+, so it’s not required to set up printing.

Final Steps

If none of the above works, try resetting the printing system:

  1. System SettingsPrinters & Scanners
  2. Right-click (or Ctrl + Click) in the printer list
  3. Select Reset Printing System
  4. Add the printer again.

This should get your printer working! Let me know if you run into any issues. 😊
