HP OFFICEJET PRO 8610
macOS 10.15 Catalina

The problem began when I attempted to scan a document, and received the following error message: Scanner reported an error - Failed to open a connection to the device.  After doing a search it was recommended that I update the printer firmware.

Following the steps to "update printer firmware for printers connected to a Mac," I hit a dead end after step (5.).  Step (6.) reads: "Click Firmware, and then click Download."

There is no "Firmware" or "Download" to click.  I'm stumped!

Additionally, please install below drivers, I personally believe that such behavior occurs due to lack of software, not due to outdated firmware.

Download and install below drivers:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Applications/ASU/HPPrinterDrivers5.1.dm...

Next, install the latest HP Easy Scan below and try scanning with it, it will be installed within the Applications folder:

If your printer is on a network and has access to the internet turn automatic update ON, and the printer will update itself.
