Using HPSmart to install new 5101 Smart Tank. The heads are installed correctly but the set up stops at alignment step. I keep getting a message that the printer door is open, but it's not. Any suggestions on how to finish set up would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @woodrow25
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It sounds like you're encountering a frustrating issue during the setup of your HP Smart Tank 5101. The "printer door is open" message could be caused by a sensor misalignment or software glitch.
Here are some steps to help you resolve this and complete the alignment process:
1. Check the Printer Door and Sensors
- Ensure the Door is Fully Closed:
- Open and close the printer door firmly to ensure it’s properly latched.
- Check for any obstructions, such as packaging materials or debris, that might prevent the door from closing completely.
- Inspect the Door Sensor:
- The sensor that detects whether the door is closed might be misaligned or dirty. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently clean the sensor area.
2. Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Retry the alignment process through the HP Smart app.
3. Perform a Hard Reset
- Disconnect the power cord while the printer is on.
- Wait for 30 seconds, then reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
- This can reset the printer and clear temporary errors.
4. Update Firmware
- Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed:
- Open the HP Smart app and select your printer.
- Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Firmware Update.
- Follow the prompts to update the firmware.
5. Align the Printer Manually
- If the alignment process fails through the app, try aligning the printer manually:
- Load plain white paper into the input tray.
- Access the printer’s control panel and navigate to Setup > Tools > Align Printer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment.
6. Check Ink Levels and Printheads
- Ensure all ink tanks are filled to the recommended levels.
- Verify that the printheads are installed correctly and securely. Remove and reinsert them if necessary.
