  Hi @Pat5348,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're having trouble with the Auto Document Feeder (ADF) on your Samsung C1860FW printer. If the ADF isn't working, it could be due to a variety of issues like paper jams, mechanical malfunctions, or software settings.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to help reset and resolve the problem:

1. Check for Paper Jams

  • Open the ADF and carefully check for any paper jams inside the feeder.
  • Look for any stuck paper in the paper path, and gently remove any obstructions.
  • Be sure to check both the ADF input tray and output tray.
  • Also, inspect the document feeder rollers to make sure they are not dirty or obstructed by debris. If necessary, clean the rollers using a soft, lint-free cloth and a bit of water or alcohol.

2. Ensure the Paper is Loaded Correctly

  • Make sure the paper in the ADF input tray is properly aligned. The paper should not be too thick or too thin for the ADF, as this can cause feeding issues.
  • Ensure that the paper guides in the tray are adjusted to fit snugly around the paper stack, but not too tight.
  • Use standard-sized paper and avoid curled or bent paper, which can cause issues with feeding.

3. Reset the Printer

A simple reset might fix any temporary issues with the ADF:

  • Turn off the printer by pressing the Power button.
  • Unplug the printer from the power source.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • After rebooting, try the ADF again.

4. Check the ADF Settings on the Printer

Sometimes, settings on the printer itself or in the printing software might affect ADF functionality:

  • On the Printer’s Control Panel:
    • Navigate to the Copy or Scan menu and ensure you’re selecting the ADF as the source for documents (not the flatbed).
    • Ensure the printer is set to recognize the ADF. If there's an option for Document Feeder or Scan Source, confirm it's set correctly.

5. Update or Reinstall Drivers

If the issue persists, it might be related to outdated or corrupt drivers:

  • Download the latest drivers for your Samsung C1860FW from the Samsung/HP website (since Samsung printers are now supported by HP).
  • Install the latest printer and scanner drivers for your operating system.
  • If the drivers are already up to date, try reinstalling them to resolve any software-related issues.

6. Test with a Different Document

If you're scanning multiple pages and the ADF fails with some documents but not others, it might be an issue with the specific document you're trying to scan.

  • Try scanning a different document to see if the ADF works with that one.
  • Check for marks or folds on the document that might cause the ADF to misfeed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
