Can’t set up Laserjet M234 printer. Have inputted serial number and PIN number - no good, printer is recognised by the HP Smart app but will not print. Have tried both HP Smart desktop and mobile apps - no good. The help pages are dire - I even went back to the printed guide and the printed reference guide and they were useless too. Will someone help me get this heap of rubbish moving before I go and buy another make?

Ensure Printer Hardware is Set Up

  • Unpack: Remove the printer and all packing materials from the box.
  • Power On: Connect the printer to a power source and turn it on.
  • Load Paper: Load paper into the input tray and install toner if not already done.

Connect Printer to Network

  • Wi-Fi: Ensure your printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your device.
  • Ethernet: If using a wired connection, connect the printer directly to the network router.
  • Download the HP Smart app onto your mobile device or computer:

Set Up New Printer in HP Smart App

  1. Open HP Smart App: Launch the HP Smart app on your mobile device or computer.
  2. Add Printer: On the welcome screen, click "Set Up a New Printer".
  3. Sign In: Sign in to your HP account. If you don't have an HP account, create one.
  4. Select Printer: Follow the on-screen instructions to select your printer and connect it to the network.
  • Ensure you are entering the correct serial number and PIN.
    • Serial Number: Usually found on a label on the back or inside of your printer.
    • PIN: Typically provided during the setup process.

Mandatory Firmware Update

  1. Check Firmware: After connecting, look for a mandatory firmware update. Follow the instructions to complete the update.
  • Confirm and allow the update to proceed.
  • Tap “Finish Setup” once the update is complete.

Updating the firmware

Secure Connection

  • Control Panel: If prompted, secure the connection from the printer control panel by pressing the Information button .
  • Once the setup is complete, try printing a test document. Click "Print a Document" in HP Smart app to verify functionality.

Skip printing or print a page when setup is complete
