Having problems with compatible cartridges. Been working fine then suddenly printer says “non hp chip detected”. Trying to delete firmware updates via hp smart but won’t let me select “do not check”. Defaults to “auto update”.
How can I change this?

@Rls106, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to deal with these firmware update issues and cartridge compatibility problems. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this:
Disable Firmware Updates
Access Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Open the HP Smart app on your iOS device.
- Select your printer and go to Advanced Settings.
- This will open the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).
Change Firmware Update Settings:
- In the EWS, navigate to General > Firmware Update.
- Look for an option to disable automatic updates or set it to manual.
Block Firmware Updates via Network
If the firmware auto-update toggle is stuck on “Auto” in HP Smart:
Option A: Block HP update domains on your router
Block these URLs in your router’s settings:
fwupdate.hp.com
hp.com
This stops the printer from reaching HP's servers.
Option B: Disconnect printer from internet
- Turn off Web Services (e.g., HP ePrint, Instant Ink).
- Disconnect from Wi-Fi if not needed.
- Use USB connection or local network-only printing.
We strongly recommend you use HP cartridges.
