Spent days following instructions attempting to set up Smart Tank7602.  Nothing is working as instructions say .  Finally make progress and get to point where you type in unit PW and PIN—but the PIN has numbers, letters and special characters, the keyboard provided is NUMBERS ONLY!!  Cut/paste won’t work.  What the heck???

Hi @Marigold2025,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how frustrating this is. You’ve followed all the steps, made progress, and then hit a wall because the printer’s PIN entry screen only shows a numeric keypad while your password includes letters and special characters. This is a known pain point during HP Smart Tank setup.

Why This Happens

  • The printer is asking for the Wi-Fi password, but the on-screen keyboard defaults to numeric mode.
  • HP Smart Tank models often require you to switch keyboard modes to enter letters and symbols, but the toggle isn’t obvious.

How to Fix It

  1. Look for a Keyboard Toggle Icon
    • On the printer’s touchscreen, check for a “ABC”, “#@”, or keyboard icon near the keypad.
    • Tap it to switch from numeric to alphanumeric mode.

  2. Use HP App Instead
    • If the printer UI is too limited, skip manual entry:
      • Open the HP App on your phone or PC.
      • Add the printer → Enter your Wi-Fi credentials in the app.
      • The app sends the password to the printer automatically.

  3. Alternative: WPS Setup
    • If your router supports WPS:
      • Press the WPS button on your router.
      • On the printer, press and hold the Wireless button until it blinks.
      • This connects without typing the password.
